The assembly part is the final resort. 

For an array of int a[] with a known size,  a search of the key of 32 bits
can speed up by using  a hash for the top 12 to 16 bits first  to limit the range of search in the array. 

Do I have to explicitly say the details here?

That would be a very very  lousy way  to train young programmers.
