These create geodesics that originate at the event horizon, and the 
process of creating the radiation makes the black hole lighter

They can get a bigger whenever they capture external mass. The gravity 
waves generated during that capture carry off some of mass, so the 
larger black hole is less than the sum of it parts. LIGO has recorded it 
happening.
