And people have a choice. Bows and arrows are cheap, but not all that effective. The people who chose them don't last long in combat situations. In classical Greek armies, the armored infantry-men were the citizens who were rich enough to afford bronze armor. If you were less well off you carried a bow into combat, and had to run away if somebody with good armor and a sword or spear came after you. Tactics was all about using you heavy infantry to protect your archer and slingers - and later on - your catapults. -- Bill Sloman, Sydney
