I've had the same thing - well, external USB power remaining on - but
I've not connected it to Thunderbird; laptop appears fully shut down,
but external fan tray (and its blue light) remain on. But it _does_ shut
off eventually - but I think it can be a minute or two (possibly even
more) after the laptop appears to have shut off.
