When you say only echoes one character, do you mean the router only
echoes one character, but the actual password was entered (i. e. gave
you access)? This _could_ be a security feature. Turnpike used to always
show 5 (IIRR) asterisks for a password, regardless of the actual length
thereof; their argument, which made sense to me, was that showing the
actual number of asterisks was an aid to the potential cracker, as it
indicated how many characters _were_ in the password. I've been
surprised how few (possibly no) other situations have implemented this
concealment.

But the following sounds more probable.>
