OK, I just saw at least one half-assed measure to distinguish crooks 
from possibly those whose information is valid. In the list of 5 Militia 
figures, one of them was already killed in bombings early in the 40-day 
war. So I guess they included his name and picture to check the validity 
of claims that will be pouring into the department.

All they need is to ask the informer they are interested in that one 
too, and based on the response, they'd get a measure of how fake the 
rest of the information has been. Something like that.

To check whether the reward announcement was itself valid, I went to 
State Department site and clicked and clicked till I was taken to 
another site at:

where, I can see that the guy who's dead is still listed. But this is 
not a site belonging to State Dept. It might in fact be in Israel.

So now I get the feeling that State Dept got rid of real Iran experts in 
it, then gave the whole deal to Israelis to handle instead :)

It is quite possible.

The State Department itself might not even have an Iran desk anymore. 
Anything regarding Iran comes up, they ask Israelis to look into and 
report to them. Compliments of Narco R. and that genius of yours Trampon.
