Back in the day, 20+ years ago I experimented with all sort of completion techniques. Worst by far is the thread per connection crap. It does not scale at all. Actually, WaitForMultipleObjects worked kind of okay but we must remember to scramble or shift the objects in the array to avoid starvation. select did not scale, etc... IOCP on Windows is bar none, the way to go.
