In Japanese stories swords may be quite attached to their weilders and so to in European myth. In Jack and the B eanstalk the singing harp called out to the Giant, its owner. Not quite the same thing but are Spaceships with Minds animate or not? In the Retief stories the Luggage is quite attached to is owner though it is only expressed in action. Guess who has nothing better to do 4th of July...
