Hi Carlos,

Excellent point! I was speaking about us. We're all power users, I presume.

Given I never disagree with any logically sensible observation, I must
agree that the poor examples I used (of ls & dir) are "more essential" to
the average Linux and Windows user than adb is to the average Android user.

What I should have said more clearly is essential to whom. 
I agree that adb is not essential to the masses of Android hoi polloi. 

What adb is essential to is people like we are, who consider ourselves
power users, such as anyone who needs to automate, debloat, debug,
sideload, or recover a device, in addition to my main use of adb which is
to interoperate seamlessly the phone with any desktop PC on the planet.

In that power-user interoperability context, adb is as fundamental as a
compiler is to a programmer, even as proletariat never touch a compiler.

Hence, I agree with you that a better analogy would have stayed within the
realm of interoperability & efficiency tools rather than basic OS commands.

For example, on Linux a closer match would be something like ssh, rsync, or
even udevadm. These are not essential to the average Linux user, but they
are absolutely essential to anyone who needs to automate, inspect, or
interoperate with devices at a deeper level.

On Windows, a closer match would be something like PowerShell remoting,
pnputil or the various command-line tools in the Windows ADK. Again, normal
users never touch interoperability tools for efficiency, but anyone who
needs to script, manage or interoperate with devices depends on them.

Those kinds of tools are optional for the masses but indispensable for
power users who need reliable, scriptable, cross-platform interoperability.

Given nothing else does what adb does, adb fits that same category.
