I usually make a folder in "local folders", and then just drag and drop what I want there.
Then when done, I shutdown Thunderbird, open the "local folders" in my profile and move 
any folders I don't want to see.

I have about 7 likes this sitting on an archive drive.  I've pulled them back and bingo 
they just appear.
