That all applies to Windows setups, it's controlled via Preferences > Advanced > Software Installtion. On my Windows machine, I have it set to check daily, it then informs me that there's a new level. There's also a "Check for Updates" under Help. My Linux machines do not have that option, presumably they've been compiled that way. No idea about the Apple world.
