By default, glxgears syncs to vblank.  To unlock it:

$ vblank_mode=0 __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 glxgears
106787 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21357.289 FPS
108361 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21671.984 FPS
108247 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21648.572 FPS
