OneDrive is integrated into Windows so as long as you have an up-to-date
Windows you'll be fine.

I'm surprised to read this. I've had dropbox for at least 10 years over
multiple systems. Never had this issue.

Not an issue. A requirement for being always online would fail in so many
scenarios - including your suggestions - that it can't happen.
