The commonest if you're a plumber and doing it all the time is probably soldered joints, but that involves a blowlamp or similar; the other is compression fittings, where a (usually copper) ring is placed over the end of the pipe and compressed inside the fitting, which causes the ring, pipe, and fitting (mostly the ring) to deform into each other, suppressing leaks.
