I would attempt all of those, with the exception of the thermal paste. 
(HDD/SSD and memory much easier if there are panels over them that can 
be removed, but that tends not to be the case on modern laptops, which 
also make the battery [I assume we're talking main battery not CMOS one] 
difficult to get at.)

I'd also have a go at dismantling the lid to get at the display module, 
though probably only if I could find a YouTube.

Agreed (though finding where some of them _are_, such as under the

This is true; Carlos has more or less said he's going to scrap it, so 
nothing to lose. I'd give it a try - would seem a pity to if it _is_ 
just a loose connection.

The disassembly, in my case, allowed me to find the part number of the 
display _module_ (display plus backlight as a sealed unit), which was on 
a label on the back of the module.

Depends on the size of the moon they charge (-:. I have no experience 
with computer parts, but car parts, I was willing to pay a bit extra to 
get a clean, removed, and working part. (Handbrake cable many years ago; 
door lock and window winder assembly a few years ago.)>>
