Like in any other country, in Iran too, there is a population of 
underage kids who have fulltime jobs. This is unfortunate but is a 
reality. It is not new in Iran either, as for ages many families in 
major Iranian cities devoted one big room in their houses to weaving 
Persian Carpets. Most of the work in that tedious job was and is done by 
kids.

They don't say how many of these kids are working fulltime while they 
should be going to school and enjoy their lives. I've not seen such 
report, to be exact.

Today, some other statistics about them came out in a mini paper (by 
سازمان بهزیستی ). In reading it I noticed a deliberate attempt to hide 
the percentages for a certain category of reasons behind the issue. The 
poverty factor.

They don't seem to care to bring proof that there is a job 
discrimination for parents of these kids based on their citizenship. 
They say presently 60% of the kids are Iranian and 40% foreigners. But 
when it comes to poverty as the reason behind it, they always combine 
the percentages of poverty with other factors to hide the numbers for 
poverty as the cause.

For instance, paper says 74% of the total population of these kids work 
fulltime jobs only for two reasons: either both sides of their parents 
are addicts, or, what the father and mother both earn by no means can 
support their expenses..

So the reader is still left to wonder of this 74% what portion have 
addict parents and what portion poor parents.

I think they do not give out the total number of these kids, as well as 
specific numbers of them being there for poverty reasons, not just 
because it is illegal to allow underage kids work, but because perhaps 
they do not want to provide a way for the enemy to calculate the 
effectiveness of their using sanctions as weapon.

It is a war thing. Using sanctions is an act of war, and in a war, the 
victim tries to hide the effectiveness of enemy's weapons.

And this war, has thus affected the contents of papers as well.. They're 
not lying, but they're hiding some facts in subtle ways.

So 26% of the total population have other reasons to work fulltime jobs 
than poverty and addiction of parents. I think most of them must be 
weaving carpets in hidden rooms like it has been so customary in Iran's 
culture and way of life. The paper has not placed this reason under 
poverty because even some well-doing traditional families have such 
workshops inside their houses.

Chamran, the physicist guy who ended up participating quite effectively 
in early phases of the imposed Iran-Iraq war, is a good example. He was 
from a middle class family in Tehran, and yet himself and all his 
siblings in the house participated in weaving socks so the family could 
earn some more money on the side as well. Weaving socks used to be very 
popular in Iranian's households.

Similarly, Habibi's household in Tehran (he was an early presidential 
candidate) was that of a middle class family, yet everybody in his 
family also wove socks systematically and delivered them to bazaar and 
sold them. He said this took place in his entire childhood and teen years.

Habibi was a capable man, and is the guy who wrote the first version of 
Iran's constitution after collapse of Pahlavi regime, in case you don't 
remember. He was quite a guy, one of the jewels, but didn't believe in 
talking or writing. So any information about him in fact has come from 
his wife, not himself. His absent autobiography is a pain in the hearts 
of all the Iranians who matter.

Again according to his wife, he had once told her every time he sat down 
to write a biography of himself, he'd hit the point where he had to 
either write lies, or become the subject of assassination by "friends 
_and_ foes."

So he'd soon stop and destroy the pages. A certain very sensitive period 
of time in Iran's history right after the collapse of Shah's regime is 
still in dark because he did not write that autobiography. He just kept 
everything in himself until he died. He never discussed politics with 
his wife either.

Anyway, and there are agricultural chores that kids often end up doing. 
But that's mostly during summer when schools are closed. So I'd consider 
the 26% normal and in fact a part of the way how some Iranian families are.

I am NOT from such a household, by the way. Hehe :) The first job I ever 
had took only two months, and was right before graduating from 
university, and I did that job with utter anger, frustration, 
disillusionment, trauma, feeling betrayed, backstabbed, and forsaken.. ! 
That was my first job in my life :)

I was that spoiled.
