Typical Mac apps use aliases to reference files. Aliases > utilize inodes. not while open, they don't. apps sometimes use aliases to track closed files though, but bookmarks is the new preferred way. aliases can use inodes but not always. they use a combination of things, including the full path, a persistent id (which can be but isn't necessarily an inode) and other information to locate a file, including on unmounted volumes. an alias file also has an icns and an alis resource in the resource fork. what he's talking about is changing the name of an open file, which isn't normally an issue unless the app is poorly written (some do exist). some apps even detect the name change and update the title bar with the new name immediately (e.g., preview). however, photoshop updates it the next time the document is saved.
