I found it. It was a BBC show called "Electric Dreams" from 2009, but I
did partlymix it up with the other "back to the past" shows since it
only covered the technology from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s ...
Electric Dreams (BBC)
---------------
30 years of technological time travel
Electric Dreams explores how the technological revolution
of the 1970s, 80s and 90s has transformed Britain¹s homes
and all our lives.
The Sullivan-Barnes family from Reading are a thoroughly
modern family who own the latest in 21st century gadgetry.
In a unique experiment they were stripped of all their
modern tech and their own home was taken back in time so
that they could live with the technology of earlier
decades. The family lived a year per day starting in
1970 right up to the year 2000.
The experiment was designed to show just how much
technology has changed the British home and the British
family. How would a modern family cope with one black
and white television set, one shared dial telephone in
the hallway and no central heating in 1970?
Would the lack of multiple screens and technology-free
bedrooms encourage them to spend more time together or
just result in very bored children? How would they fare
without the labour-saving domestic technology we now
take for granted?
As the rate of technological change sped up during the
1980s and the 1990s the family saw first hand just how
much the way we use our homes, family life and attitudes
to childhood has changed.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/electricdreams/about.shtml
There was also another British TV show called "Home of the Future"
where a family had all the very latest technology (in 2012) installed
in their house ...
Home of the Future (Channel 4)
------------------
What happens if you ask a normal family to boldly go
where no-one has gone before to live in the future?
This Channel 4 series, co-funded by one of the UK¹s
leading energy companies E.ON, transforms the lives of a
family, filling their home from top-to-bottom with
futuristic technology and gadgets.
As well as having cutting-edge technology and gadgets to
play with, the Perera family in Sheffield will be
challenged by scenarios likely to come in the next twenty
to fifty years.
Overseen by expert Chris Sanderson the Pereras will
discover how we may work, rest and play as well as eat,
travel, stay healthy and power our homes.
The series looks at the effects of working from home and
living in multi-generational households and asks: what
will we eat when cheap food is gone and mass-produced meat
is unsustainable? And the family face being shamed by
their bin if they don¹t recycle enough and being
temporarily banned from short car journeys (electric and
hydrogen-powered, naturally).
But the future is not all bad news as the Pereras discover
mind-controlled games, domestic power stations that slash
their bills, robots they can control from the other side
of the world, waterless washing machines, cars, lawnmowers
and vacuums that drive themselves and the joys of growing
your own fish supper.
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/home-of-the-future
It's already out of date though - in one episode they were designing
their own custom pens and bedside lamps to be 3D printed, but had to
email the plan back to a factory which printed them and delivered them
vai post ... although still fairly expensive, you can now have your own
3D printer at home.
