#39668 — How to get a 2FA message sent to non-SMS number?

FromChris Green <cl@isbd.net>
Date2026-09-28 15:15 +0100
SubjectHow to get a 2FA message sent to non-SMS number?
Message-ID<bc9qom-u2t1.ln1@q957.zbmc.eu>
We moved our old landline to VOIP a year or so ago. The landline had a
Gigaset DECT system that accepted SMS messages.

Our new VOIP system doesn't accept SMS messages and there doesn't seem to
be any system like landlines used to have that converts SMS to voice.

We have a need to get a 2FA code that is being sent to the ex-landline
number, can anyone suggest a way around this conundrum?

I would not expect handsets to receive SMS over VOIP, so you'd need an
alternative interface, eg web or email.

If it's on 'digital voice', the only way I can think is to port the number
to a VOIP provider that offers SMS over landline numbers. I would check
that they support it for originally-BT or whoever numbers in your particular
area code, as I understand there can be some differences in which number
blocks support SMS.

If your number is already with a standalone VOIP provider, perhaps ask them
if they can accept incoming SMS and send it to email or something. Maybe
they have to put you on a different package to enable that?

If you don't have one already, get the cheapest mobile you can find.

That doesn't help! The whole problem is that the ex-landline number is
the **only** number that the site in question will send the 2FA code to.

I've not heard of any VoIP provider supporting SMS, my provider
(voipfone) does not. I think I saw on a BT forum that the SMSC that
handle(s|d) SMS over POTS delivery, including spoken delivery, for
landlines will go away in January 2027 with the general end of landlines.

AA says it supports it in some places, but it arrives as an email. So
arguably that isn't supporting it.

I knew they supported mobile->email SMS delivery for their SIMs, but
seems odd to offer PSTN->email SMS delivery for such a small range of
STD codes.

Three or so years back when I moved to VOIP (with A&A), the implication
was that I could get SMS to my VOIP line. However on further
investigation, you could get it on my exchange, but only to a limited
range of numbers, and mine wasn't in that range. So far as I could
tell, it was a range that had never been used by BT and its
predecessors.

If it was originally a BT number spoken SMS still works at least for
some VOIP suppliers. So my VOIP is with VOIPFONE and after a while I
started getting weird calls which turned to be from the SMS to Voice
service.

Others have had this.

It was originally BT (but a pretty long time ago, i.e. ten years or more)
but sending a text message just does absolutely nothing.

It just says that no curfew has been configured so I don't think there's
anything I can do with that.

I was looking at my Voipfone account today and I saw a tab called SMS
Messages. It looks convoluted though, "To receive a message, your
sender needs to compose their text in this format: <Account number>
space <your message of less than 150 characters>"

And there is also a Send SMS button.

I decided to test this, I sent a message from Voipfone to my mobile and
it arrived but from a Voipfone virtual mobile number, not specific to
me. I then replied to it using the format I mentioned above and that
worked. But I thought well that's not useful if everyone has to use that
format, so on a hunch I thought maybe I have established a connection so
I will send another without the account number and it arrived just the
same. I am using the web interface for Voipfone, not the actual phone.
