#39073 — usenet news on android

FromDavid Wade <g4ugm@dave.invalid>

Subjectusenet news on android
Message-ID<10om3v8$33khm$1@dont-email.me>
I am planning to go travelling so didn't want to be lugging a laptop
around with me, so was thinking of taking an Android tablet.

In many ways its ideal. Most of the apps I struggle to read on my phone
work just fine. The one thing that doesn't work at all in reading these
newsgroups. It looks like there are no viable, cost effective options
for android.

Has anyone any thoughts on this ?

If you install Termux you can use a linux terminal based usenet
client. I use Gnus but there are other simpler ones which might work.

I have emacs and gnus working. Note that you could with enough patience
set up your own key shortcuts to make life easier.

I think this might be a steep learning curve. At present just trying tin
on my PC which seems not too bad. The problem with EMACS is I haven't
used it in so long I need to re-learn it..

Dave
p.s. thanks to everyone who suggested solutions. I will try them all......

My problem with Emacs was akin to my problem with cocaine: people who
used either seemed to be arrogant arseholes

I have used tin on termux, it works OK. (I normally use tin on my
laptop). tin is still maintained.

I am not sure what you mean by a package. Presumably a package in
Termux? I installed Termux from F-droid I think. And then I installed
emacs from the Termux command line using:

pkg install emacs

and then I ran gnus with

emacs -f gnus

Also I installed openssh so I could transfer emacs config files via sftp.

If you don't have any news server configured you can use gnus-no-server
and then press B to prompt for one.

I thats what I was missing. The GNUS manual suggests it sets up a link/alias

I use an old version of PiaoHong, but almost exclusively to read. A
modification was made a couple of years ago by Alfio (in
it.tlc.cellulari.android) which is an improvement.

You can download the (free) apk here:

Sorry if this is too late to be useful, but if you're travelling *outside*
the UK, one simple option is to use my web gateway at https://newsgrouper.org
One or two Android users have told me they find it preferable to the other
news clients available there. It's only an option outside the UK because
the unfortunately-broad requirements of the UK's Online Safety Act make it
impractical for me to serve users in the UK.
