#44533 — Unable to call/text a family member

FromChris <ithinkiam@gmail.com>
Date2024-06-09 14:37 +0000
SubjectUnable to call/text a family member
Message-ID<v44en6$3imgj$1@dont-email.me>
Really strange one I'm struggling with at the moment. I'm on a UK SIM and
my family member is on a French SIM whom I'm visiting just now. They can
call/text me, but I can't do either. Texts just disappear and calls go
straight to voicemail. They can call other Uk numbers with no problems.

I have both phones in my hands. Both are iphones fully up to date.

Where to start troubleshooting this?

Can you use manual network select to put the French iPhone on another UK
network? I’m assuming you are in the UK?

We're both in France. I've tried changing my roaming network with no
change.

I can contact other people just fine.

Are you by any chance using 3? If so there are issues (and have been for
years) with text disappearing into the ether. IIRC it was worst on S
African SPs.

The fact that calls do not connect and texts get lost suggests you may
not have the apn etc set up correctly.

When voice calls are made to the French phone you say you get voicemail. Is
the voicemail outgoing message generated by the French network, ie in
French?

Yup. I get through to their network's voicemail in French.

Can another phone make a voice call to this French phone? If yes it seems
to imply the network can reach that phone and your number is being actively
rejected by the iPhone for some reason.

Has your number been blocked on the French phone by accident?

That was what I told you to check. Not only the one on your phone.

Phone calls going straight to voicemail makes sense there. I suspect
your statement that "texts just disappear" in your OP probably confused
matters. Messages from blocked senders are received - they just show up
in a different section of the Messages app ("Blocked Senders", IIRC).

Yes, via IDmobile. I'm regularly abroad/in France and this is the first
time I've had issues.

Never experienced issues previously.

No options for setting an apn here. I can select a roaming network and
that's it.

Call your provider. I assume you pay for the service.

Can't think of a reason for calls not working, but as they're both
iPhones, presumably they're trying to use iMessage? I think I've heard
of having to re-activate after changing SIM, maybe the same applies when
roaming to a foreign network?

That's what's wired it isn't even working with imessage. It's falling back
to SMS and still doesn't arrive.

Like I said this is the only contact it doesn't work with.

Delete from addr book and call history, then re-create?

Otherwise take it to le barre de génie

The chance is super-small that the iPhone is responsible for that. It is
probably a network issue.

Are you afraid to call your provider?

First get out of France.
