The only thing that changes is the pathway into their authentication server. Once the FTTC and FTTP traffic is carried over Ethernet it's the same route thereafter, so the authentication server sees the same request and gives out the same IP. -- Graham J

I had the same /29 for 24 years with Zen, preserved across various technology changes (including to FTTP a couple of years ago) and a house move. Then last month they changed it as part of a reorganisation of their IPv4 address space. (My IPv6 allocation didn't change.) Initially I was horrified when I received the notice, but in the end the change-over was not too difficult. The biggest annoyance was that I couldn't set up rDNS on the new addresses until after the address change had happened. (Their rDNS web page will only accept a domain name whose forward DNS matches.) I reduced the TTL on forward DNS to 30 mins ahead of time, but the TTL on their rDNS records is fixed at 24 hours, so I had to make sure I didn't try to send any outgoing mail until the change had propagated. -- Geoff Clare <netnews@gclare.org.uk>
