The GZ34 can be treated as if it only has one cathode but it actually
has two separate cathodes, one inside each anode. They are electrically
joined near the pinch.

Valves with a double electrode system but only a single cathode do exist
- the QQV03-10 double tetrode for VHF transmitters is an example. The
reason is to avoid the feedback effect of the inductance of the cathode
lead, which is common to both the cathode-grid and the cathode-anode
circuits. In the push-pull double tetrode with a common cathode, the
signal currents don't have to flow down one cathode lead and up the
other, they just flow across the cathode cylinder, which has virtually
no inductance at all, and develop no significant unwanted feedback
voltage.

The valves in that series are internally neutralised with small
capacitors between the anode of one half and the grid of the opposite
half, which counteracts the internal anode-grid capacitance of each
tetrode. It was a very clever innovation and made it possible to
construct fairly powerful portable transceivers that didn't need a lot
of complicated setting up.

The drawing appears to have been done with CAD, probably Orcad, because
it has its appeareance. Components like valves are taken from a library.
The engineer uses the program, just using the existing components,
designed by the software company, and some times locally.

I wonder what was the intention of the designer when creating that
library. It surprised me a lot. Had I been in charge, I would have used
the library editor and changed that plate.

Sagging high resistance valve rectifiers are part of the 'valve sound'

With a guitar you can strike a power chord and the reservoir caps will
give you more power than the rectifier can ultimately sustain.

In my high school days I designed and build a tube amplifier for the school band
The guitar player liked it,
Many years later he asked me to design some more stuff for him.

Not all symbols show them with different sizes

True. "Diagrams" pref to show actual connection
details. However there's just SO much space on
   a page so don't expect every valve/cap/whatever
   to be "to physical scale".

Hey, a power or impedance-matching transformer,
"to scale", it'd use up 80 percent of a page
   easily :-)

I've rarely seen a circuit diagramme - or schematic diagram as they're
called in US - that shows "actual connection details" if that means a
physical representation; in the case of valves (tubes), the closest is
to show the pin numbers (but not to rearrange the representation of
what's inside such that adjacent numbers are adjacent). I think it's
even what "schematic" _means_ that it _represents_ how things are
connected together, not how they're physically arranged.

There _are_ some historic anachronisms that have remained: the symbol we
mostly use for a transistor - basically shaped like a capital letter K
(as well as the name "base" for that connection) - represents the
original point-contact transistors (but like a cat's-whisker in
construction); I have seen a transistor symbol with the base as a
horizontal rectangle, with the emitter and collector as a vertical line
through it with an arrow on the emitter side, but that's rarely used
(and probably not in any standard).

The best-known schematic diagramme - showing connections, not
geographical layout - is the London tube map (which many other such maps
around the world, for both underground and overground network maps
follow). When first proposed (by an electrical engineer! who worked for
them), London Transport didn't think it would be very popular, as it is
actually far from geographically representational; however, it proved
exceptionally so, and remains so to this day, to the extent that many
people's mental image of London _is_ the tube map, not the real layout.
(The best-known example of its non-geographicality is that there is at
least one case of a pair of stations X and Y, where looking at the "map"
you'd think you'd get on one tube line from X, go one stop to a junction
station, change, and go one stop on the other line to Y - whereas in
fact it'd be quicker to walk out of station X and walk 100 yards down
the road to where Y is.)

It was a standard, but at some point some august intertanational body
changed it all to what we have now

Thanks; I've seen them shown on TV documentaries about the map, but
didn't remember the specific examples. (I made up the 100 yards, but it
was a short distance - I think in some cases less than the walking
through tunnels you'd have to do to change lines at the junction point.)>>

Multicore cable! And transmitting actual power! That's expensive.

The Telefónica system used the same copper pair as the phone,
multiplexing a few channels on higher frequencies. Thus some kind of
receiver was needed, but no additional copper.
