Ah, the good old Shure SM57 - what a mic!

I have a recollection at one time they used the Calrec unit 
(Soundfield?) that had a 'Blumlein' crossed pair at the front and a 
single rearwards for effect hung above the conductor, with two 'fillers' 
half way across each side on the front line of the orchestra.

I have a feeling this thread will be one of those that grows without 
boundaries!

As she says, they use a large variety of placements to suit the 
performance being made. Ranging from a flying spaced pair over the 
conductor's head to spotting every instrument...
