#70363 — German video wall of the 1970s

I was just looking at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm_jj2Mlhcc, and
thinking about the video wall behind the performers; I don't think
there's any trickery involved - it appears to be a 16 × 12 array of
video monitors, i. e. 192 of them. (I can't work out whether the side
"walls" are just lights or further monitors.) My first thought was just
how much it must actually _weigh_; then how much power it must use (how
much power did a monitor consume in 1978?), and thus the heat it must
involve. (All seemed to be working fine.)

(The video has the ultra-quality I associate with German TV of that
period [I grew up there then]; not sure what it is about it - maybe
over-sharpened?)

Europeans see luxury as a badge of civilisation. Whereas we [British]
have shabbiness as a badge of civilisation.

My theory is that the 16x12 array is back-projected from 4x3 monitors,
split by mirrors to give 16 images each.

I wouldn't say the video was ultra-quality - just typical of the time.

I have never heard that Abba song before.

Interesting thought! That would certainly reduce the weight, power
consumption, and heat.

Certainly the upscaling does it no favours. Maybe it's just me, but I
have the feeling German studio video of this period had a certain something.

According to the notes on that youTube:

Song composed by Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus

Recorded 1 June 1977
Released 12 December 1977 "The Album" Studio Album. - 1 May 1978

It wasn't released as a single in the UK.

I had, but wondered why the TV show would pick such a 'dirgy' song that
made them all look like woodentops?

presumably it was their current single in that country.
