My brother (a Mac owner since '85) has complained about this
recently. He said that he has become gun-shy about updates to Mac OS
since High Sierra, and especially with Mojave and Catalina.

It does seem kind of strange to me that people are posting, "I updated
my Mac and it's working fine!" as if that is an uncommon thing.

I've had pretty good luck with Sierra -> High Sierra -> Mojave ->
Catalina. They did break PDF rendering with HS and Mojave and it's at
least improved enough with Catalina that I no longer have to use (yuck)
Acrobat Reader.

There is one piece of software that I lost the use of with Catalina, but
that was because the developer didn't update it.

It does still seem strange to me that my computer is unusable for a half
hour or so every time I have to apply an OS update. It's better than the
sucky way Windows does it, but I haven't run Windows as a daily driver
in years so Windows updates are things that happen to other people. :-)

No I don't think so - I think it is because otherwise all you see is 
"Catalina hosed my Mac" (or whatever). Seeing positive results is helpful.

MacOS updates are really rather slower than I feel they should be, given 
everything's happening on SSDs.

Took a surprisingly long time both to download (mind you, Anne and I were
doing it simultaneously on a 37 Mb/s connection) and to instal. We were able
to wash and wipe up after breakfast during the install time.

All well, except that it broke the software that drives the scanner on our
Canon TS510 3-in-one. I know this because I had to reinstall it yesterday to
use it and today I checked and it's duff again. We use the scanner only
rarely, but it's irritating to find it's not available when we do.

I'm not blaming the Catalina upgrade, I'm blaming Canon for using software
that needs reinstalling after every system upgrade. See the sig.

FYI, John, I found an App in the *iPHONE* Apple App store which allows 
me to scan from my iPhone instead of using the controls on my Canon 
MG5350 or on my iMac.

It's called 'Canon PRINT' - it's free, and it works!

Do you really need Canon's drivers? See if you can configure it as an 
AirPrint printer and scanner. I managed to do this with my newish HP 
Officejet, and it is perfectly functional despite not having any HP 
drivers on my Catalina system.

I'll look into that.

At present, the installer is telling me that it can't find the TS5051 and when
I say "It''s THAT one!" using the IP address, it says it's in use by another
device - presumably Anne's iMac. I'll pursue that tomorrow.

Drivers now successfully installed. I prefer to use the Canon software, as
I've got it all set up to suit my needs and I'm used to it.

Hard to tell whether I'm using Apple's or canon's drivers. I just upgrade from
one version of macOS to another and somehow it all works without much effort.

I also have a Canon scanner. I gave up trying to get compatible Canon 
drivers every time macOS is updated. I use Image Capture which works 
perfectly with my scanner.

It was a matter of reinstalling the drivers, now accomplished. Irritating but
there you are.

Over the 20 years I've been using OSX nothing has caused me more trouble than
printers, though I never had any serious difficulty in the Classic era. Come
back the ImageWriter, all is forgiven!

I just have an old Mac Mini as dedicated scanner driver.
It never gets updated, from Snow IIRC, and works always,
