I just found the cost of my iPad to get free Apple TV+ for a year might have been worth every penny. Maybe! For all the Asimov ‘Foundation’ fans out there (I’m one, probably my favourite ever set of books to read), they’ve made/making a Foundation series for 2021. The trailer looks good, hopefully not the usual full of the only good bits trailer, but it does look like it could be worth a watch. -- Andy H

Yup, I’ve just finished collecting and reading the entire series, and all the original ‘Robot’ books too, very clever how, probably not originally by design, he managed to to include most of these books into a chronological sequence. I’ve read the original trilogy a number of times, and the extra three books a few too, by far my favourite all time reads. -- Andy H

It's a thing a number of ageing SF authors have done with their bibliography - retroactively merging continuities. Some work out better than others. I was quite impressed by the trailer, hoping it works out well.

I didn’t like the trailer. Thought it was utterly the wrong tone - people looking like doom was appearing in the next second, people grimacing everywhere, they’ve already changed a number of the original characters and the whole thing seemed another exercise in “in the future, everyone has forgotten how to turn the lights bulbs up”. Just thought the tone looked totally different to the books. I wish it well, but I really love the books so may not watch. Cheers, Ian

It looks like they've changed genders on at least one character, which is entirely reasonable. IIRC the early books (or just the first?) kept jumping forward in time which would require complete cast changes, so I wonder how they're going to deal with that? -- Chris

That’s a very good point of course. I had thought it was being advertised as part of the TV+ service, but I’ll try and check that out. -- Andy H

Yeah, that’s the conclusion I came to as well. If the series is good enough, I’d pay for the subscription long enough to watch it all (I assume they’ll initially release it line episode a week, as they do on Netflix). -- Andy H

They released For All Mankind an episode a week, so ... well who knows but given Apple TV+'s relative dearth of material I'm sure they'll want to spread Foundation out a bit. -- Chris

Yeah, it’s the lack of material that made me think it not such good value as a service at the moment. I can see it being abandoned in the not too distant future to be honest, it just isn’t coming anywhere near to Netflix or Amazon Prime (even without the ‘unlimited’ extra subscription), as a value for money service. We did watch Greyhound this week, and enjoyed it, although I thought it was a bit too heavy, and a bit low budget, on the CGI elements. -- Andy H
