It's all good, though. In this case, he does. He's talking about malware hiding in firmware. He began doing this after the how to delojack a laptop thread I created sometime ago. I mentioned optionroms and how Windows would happily extract and load them, without your permission and/or knowledge (unless you catch it doing it, as I did) David did what David does, took what I wrote, without bothering to read all of it, and assumed if it's an optionrom there's fuckall you can do, the malware will always get you. But, as I'm sure you know, that's really not how it works. He doesn't understand that, and, I'd be wasting my time trying to explain the finer details. >>I was suggesting that malware can reside elsewhere within the physical >>machine. > > Yes, I saw that, as well. Optionroms aren't the only place malware could hide and remain persistent. But to say it's unstoppable or that you can't do anything about it, isn't true. David just doesn't understand the concepts involved in proper Cyber Security. He's still very much a paranoid n00b. That said, I do believe his technical abilities are greater than Snits and Tims. Atleast David will give something a try; doesn't pawn it off with 'its too hard, do it for me' like we've seen Tim repeatedly do with Apd. -- I don't need no Dr. All I need...is my lawyer.

Where to even begin with this latest display of your usual mix of condescension and misinterpretation? Let’s dive in, since you seem to enjoy making sweeping, fact-free claims. 1. “You don’t have any idea what you’ve said.” Actually, you’re the one who has no clue. If you truly understood the topic, you wouldn’t be so dismissive of what David said. He clearly mentioned the idea of malware hiding in places like firmware. I’m sure you’ve convinced yourself this is some profound revelation, but it’s basic knowledge in cybersecurity that persistent malware can exist in firmware, option ROMs, or even the BIOS. You’re not offering any new information here, just parading it as if you’ve unearthed some ancient secret. 2. “David assumed if it’s an optionrom there’s fuckall you can do, the malware will always get you.” Oh, please. It’s not an issue of David being overly cautious, it’s a reflection of the real-world difficulty of dealing with persistent firmware malware. It’s certainly not “unstoppable,” but it’s far from trivial to remove. You’re so quick to brush off valid concerns by calling David a “paranoid n00b,” but, in reality, you’re dismissing one of the most significant security risks—firmware malware—because it’s inconvenient for your narrative. That’s weak, even by your standards. 3. “David doesn’t understand the concepts involved in proper Cyber Security.” Yet, here you are, talking down to him while spewing nonsense that doesn’t even address the issue. “Proper Cyber Security” isn’t about brushing off real concerns and assuming they’re a product of paranoia. David’s skepticism about wiping a drive is valid—firmware-level threats don’t just disappear with a clean reinstall. It’s not a matter of lacking understanding; it’s about being pragmatic in a field where absolute guarantees are rarely possible. 4. “He’s still very much a paranoid n00b.” I’d love to know where you got your magical authority on defining who’s a “n00b” and who isn’t. From what I see, David seems far more grounded in understanding the nuances of persistent threats than you do, who appears content to wave them away with insults instead of offering any concrete solutions. 5. “David will give something a try; doesn’t pawn it off with ‘it’s too hard, do it for me’ like we’ve seen Tim repeatedly do with Apd.” Let’s focus on your odd, hypocritical insult about other people’s supposed shortcomings. Instead of addressing the issue at hand, you try to deflect by pointing fingers at Tim. It’s strange how you love to play the blame game and make digs at others to elevate your own fragile ego. But guess what, Gremlin? This isn’t about Tim or anyone else. It’s about malware, cybersecurity, and your complete inability to have an actual, informed discussion about it. 6. The Real Problem: You’re All Talk and No Substance. You parade around making blanket statements without actually diving into anything meaningful. Your entire stance here is built on belittling others instead of acknowledging the very real concerns they bring up. Real security experts are aware of threats like firmware-level malware and don’t wave them off with the dismissiveness you seem so fond of. You claim expertise, but all you offer is condescension and an apparent inability to engage with the complexities of the subject. So, in conclusion: stop pretending like you’ve unlocked some deeper knowledge that others can’t understand. You’re just regurgitating basic ideas with a level of smugness that’s completely undeserved. If you want to have a real discussion, maybe try backing up your bravado with actual substance. You’ve already been shown up far too many times. But hey, I’m sure this won’t sink in for you. You’ll just continue your same tired act. Enjoy the echo chamber. -- Specialist in unnecessary details and overcomplicated solutions.

But let’s not pretend that ClamXAV (or any AV) is infallible—false positives happen, and verifying is key. That said, tossing in a jab about me just shows you’re more interested in taking cheap shots than discussing security properly. If you’ve got a real point to make, stick to it. This is your latest excuse to weasel out of the potential for a real technical discussion. At the end of the day, we aren't the only ones here who know you can't keep up with me, Snit. Bluntly writing the truth (which is all I've done here) is not that of an ego demonstration. I don't have the ego you're trying to paint me out as having anymore so than I'm a 'functionally illiterate fraud'; that's another description you actually flat out, made the fuck up for me. Snit, it's a fucking fact that you're a troll. That you sock up, and, lie your fucking ass off. You accept no responsibility for any mistakes you write. Case in point, that total bullshit story you wrote for me about the floodbot. You took very creative writing liberty and went well out of your way to sell it; yet I'm the one who's supposed to be confused. That you failed to 'protect me from myself'; what in the fuck could that even mean in relation to the floodbot story you wrote, OR anything else for that matter? It sounds like a verbatim mental copy/paste from something you've been told, no doubt while on someones couch during a professional session. Dude, it's beyond clear to myself and others that you've sat on more than one couch and racked up some serious hours doing it. You're a walking adult clusterfuck in his fifties who doesn't maintain a steady job of any kind for a living. Instead, you've learned to grift. That's how you have the freetime to play and fuck around on usenet; writing nearly a thousand fucking posts in a single month. Do you still not realize such data makes it clear that you aren't a contributing member to society? That you are infact, *abusing*, the system. That my tax dollars and that of everyone else who works for a living feeds you and houses you. Snit, i'm willing to go so far as to go ahead and state that you are getting an SSI check and you have for a very long time now. That's how you're making it. But, I and others like me are responsible for where the money comes from! It comes from our fucking taxes. I can't even begin to express how happy it makes me to know that you have all the free time to do whatever you like, but you choose to fuck off on usenet all day/night while I have to work for a living. It's not even difficult to pick a post of yours at random, pull > up the snit lies methods list and match several documented ways in which you > do it, all in the same fucking post. It’s clear from your entire message that you’re trying desperately to deflect responsibility and project your own flaws onto others—classic misdirection, really. First off, the fact that you’re accusing me of being the one full of ego and false credit while you’re sitting here inventing elaborate narratives about me that have zero basis in reality is both hilarious and pathetic. You’re so fixated on your imagined superiority that you can’t even see the irony in your own words. Let’s talk about your so-called “grift” accusations. You have no idea how I live or what I do, but it’s cute that you assume I have “all this free time” based on your assumptions about what makes someone productive or valuable. I suppose to you, if someone isn’t working in a factory or on some other 9-5 grind, they’re clearly “abusing the system.” The idea that you’re entitled to make such judgments based on nothing but your own narrow perspective is laughable. Maybe you should take a moment to look at your own life and ask why you’re so consumed with how others live their lives that you’ve decided to make a hobby of slinging unfounded insults. But then again, if you spent less time “working” and more time reflecting on your own behavior, maybe you’d realize that you’re not exactly the shining beacon of responsibility you’re trying to present yourself as. Your desperate need to bring up my past and label me a “troll” is a weak attempt to discredit anything I say, but it just makes you look unoriginal. You’d have people believe I’m the problem, but all I’m doing is calling out your nonsense for what it is. Every time you point the finger at me, three fingers are pointing back at you, and you can’t even acknowledge your own hypocrisy. And as for your whining about taxes and me supposedly “sucking on the system”—do you actually think anyone cares about your misguided political views or the over-the-top way you try to make me out to be some kind of villain? It’s honestly embarrassing. You want to come off as some self-made, hard-working martyr, but what you really are is a bitter, judgmental person who can’t handle it when others aren’t as obsessed with your self-righteous, manufactured sense of superiority. You’ve been trying so hard to deflect attention from your own shortcomings by tossing out insults and throwing around baseless accusations, and it’s frankly tiring. You’re no better than the people you claim to despise, and this entire message only proves it. So keep on talking, but know that no matter how much you try to paint yourself as some kind of moral authority, you’re still just a keyboard cowboy with nothing but a bitter outlook and a lot of unsubstantiated noise. You’re transparent. And honestly? It’s pathetic. -- Specialist in unnecessary details and overcomplicated solutions.

This is what ChatGPT says about it:- **Trojan.OSX.RustAgent** is a type of macOS malware written in the Rust programming language. Rust is popular among malware developers because it’s cross-platform, fast, and harder to reverse-engineer than some older languages. The **RustAgent** Trojan usually works by: - **Gaining unauthorized access** to a macOS system. - **Downloading and executing payloads** — additional malicious software. - **Collecting sensitive data** such as passwords or browser information. - **Communicating with a command-and-control (C2) server** to receive further instructions from attackers. **How does it spread?** - Fake app installers or cracked software. - Phishing emails with malicious attachments. - Drive-by downloads from compromised websites. **How to check for it:** 1. Run a reputable antivirus/malware scanner for macOS. 2. Monitor your **Activity Monitor** for suspicious processes. 3. Check **~/Library/LaunchAgents** and **/Library/LaunchDaemons** for strange files. = Perhaps you are not as clued-up on Macs as you think you are, Dustin! -- Kind regards David (With apologies to John - but I am STILL David!)
