For me it is still pretty simple: the next and previous buttons give me next
or previous tabs or messages (whichever makes more sense in the app), and the
middle button does hide / show... though in browsers it does open links in a
new tab so there is some inconsistency there.

The other buttons are not used as much, but I have one set to hide an app,
another to resize to full size (not full screen), and another to a common size
I use.

BetterTouchTool might be able to reallocate that middlebutton. 

Is the mouse pressing F12? You may be able to see it doing that on the
Keyboard Viewer, which is on the Input Menu icon (enable that icon in Sys
prefs/Input Sources). If it is you can use Keyboard/Shortcuts to change what
F12 does.

I'm using a Logitech MX Master as my other mouse (for games that need
independent left and right click, as well as more buttons), but they're £60
when they're on sale...

You sure? I open Keyboard Viewer, and even F12 doesn't show F12 pressed on
this 2018 Mini with Mojave.latest. Keyboard is several years old, a wired
Apple one with keypad.

Huh. My wireless *deep breath* 'Wireless Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad'
does. Both for F12 and fn-F12.  Not that it calls up the Dashboard for me
because my macOS killed it.

Was just a thought, anyway.

I'm with Tim. I have the Wireless Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (the 
space grey one, not that that should make any difference) and using 
Mojave.latest I can confirm that pressing F12 just goes 'tock' and increases 
the volume a bit. It doesn't show on the Keyboard Viewer.

fn-F12, however, *does* show on Keyboard Viewer, and goes 'Funk' (sic).

As far as I know, this has always been available. If you have a keyboard where the function keys can double as hardware settings keys, there will be a setting in the keyboard sys prefs where you can toggle the behaviour of the "Fn" or "Function" key. So with the default setting, pressing the function keys on their own sends the hardware settings codes (brightness, volume etc), while holding down "Fn" while pressing the keys sends "F1", "F2" etc. Or you can have it the other way round.

If you don't see this option, it's because the keyboard doesn't have h/w settings keys, or has them on separate keys (ie they aren't doubling-up).

Yep. The 'functional improvement' is just that Big Sur successfully shows them
being pressed in the key map!

As does Catalina. Well I just checked. If I hold down the fn key the whole top
row of function keys in the viewer changes to their hardware roles.

It is years since I used the viewer. It has become quite a cutie while I
haven't been watching. Like the Thesaurus of word completions, opacity,
resize. Oh and the function key thing we are yakking about is a toolbar
option.

I've used Karabiner Elements to remap buttons.

In the particular case a Bluetooth Powerpoint-clicker that was supposedly
for Mac, but the buttons sent Shift+arrow which in Powerpoint means 'go to
start/end' rather than previous/next slide.

I also switched Ctrl and Fn to match my other laptop.

When we all went work from home, I came to the conclusion that I'd had 
it with cheap'n nasty mice.  Sure you can spend <£10 on a mouse that 
moves the cursor, has some buttons and a scroll wheel, but when it's 
something I'm going to use for most of the working day most days of the 
week, there is some logic behind extending the budget to something 
beyond bargain-basement.  After all, I've decided it's worth investing 
~£1500 on a mac where I could spend ~£300 on a basic spec windows box, 
does it really make sense cheaping out on something like a mouse? After 
looking at the options I went for a Logitech MX Master 3, and while 
it's not cheap, it is money I am very glad I spent.  It's hard to put 
into words what makes it so much better.  The weight, the feeling of 
precision with the movement, the feel of the scroll wheel (particularly 
the freewheel spin, slow speed notch mechanism), the various 
programable buttons that I never thought I wanted until I had them and 
now I can't see how I did without them.  While it might not be the 
right mouse for everybody (and definitely not for lefties), I think it 
is worth considering something that is not just "the cheapest pointing 
device that functions".

+1.  Although in my case it wasn't WFH, about a year ago I got fed up with
the 20-year-old Microsoft Intellimouse I was using (actually a very good
mouse in its day).

I switched to a high DPI mouse (from Cooler Master, not a vendor I'd
associate with mice - yes it has RGB LEDs.  There was no Logitech stock at
the preferred supplier at the time).  Having adjustable DPI means you get a
lot more precision and less need to move the mouse, especially with a big
monitor where there are a lot of pixels to move across.

So just a tip about 'gaming' mice - the aesthetic might be a bit different,
but they can work nicely too.  Particularly if stocks are a bit low due to
WFH at the moment.
