" One of the difficulties with USB disks for backup is that normally the OS has to be told that you are going to unplug the device, otherwise an in-progress transfer might cause the file system on the USB device to be corrupted. (Not sure this is true for Apple OS's; can anybody confirm?) Of course nobody ever remembers this, so when they want to take a laptop away ***NOW*** they simply unplug the USB storage. So a NAS is a good solution where you want an on-site backup; or you have a VPN to an off-site device. For a laptop, WiFi is generally a poor choice to connect to your LAN, for a variety of reasons including the shared-spectrum nature of the wireless connection; so a wired connection is generally better. A NAS device typically has internal intelligence which maintains its file system so if a backup is paused while a laptop is taken away it can resume later. The biggest difficulty I found was where a client suffered an on-site server failure, but wanted to continue working over the few days while the server was repaired or replaced. A jury-rigged system using a NAS usually solved the problem. With a decent fast internet connection it becomes possible to rely on cloud storage (until Google or the like loses your files) but the granularity of the permissions structure is not generally as good as on a local server. -- Graham J
