I'm sure I used to know this stuff...

In the course of bumbling around trying to make Usenapp behave a bit more like
MacSOUP in certain respects, I realised that you can't create system keyboard
shortcuts involving submenus - or can you??

If not, am I best stumping up for a Keyboard Maestro upgrade (which I wouldn't
object to, even though it's probably overkill), or is there a simpler
solution?

Spark is a very handy little app that I've been using for many years.
Assigning keyboard shortcuts to submenu commands in Adobe Illustrator allowed
me to work in Illustrator almost as fast as I could in Freehand. Surprisingly
it still works in Catalina. And it's free!

Thanks for the suggestion Mihael, though as it turns out you *can* do
submenus in the system kb shortcuts.

That was news to me too. Spark, though, does do other things. It might be
regarded as a mini Keyboard Maestro. I'll keep using it as it allows me to
reassign the Function keys to my liking which was not possible with Keyboard
Shortcuts.

 You can add them from System Preferences > Keyboard. Exact spelling is a
must. 

Wish Apple had an easier way, but I can give better details and even show
you with a video if you want.

Thanks. Once I realised you just put in the submenu name, and didn't need to
type some kind of path to it, all was clear. (In fact I'm not sure how someone
has managed to spin it out into a video :)

of course you can. all that matters is matching the menu item exactly
in the keyboard system preference pane, shortcuts tab.

Don’t know if this helps, I added some keyboard shortcuts in sub menus for
Lightroom to activate some plugins, and had to add spaces at the beginning
of the title to representing the nesting level.
