Run a surface test over it. I'd use 'smartctl -t long /dev/whatever' but I
don't do surface tests on Macs or USB devices so would welcome better advice!

I don't use it often enough to know off the top of my head, and being on Big
Sur it's not working for me right now, sorry.

That's definitely not where you want to be, it's found the only volume it can
twiddle is the internal Recovery volume for emergency booting to. Don't
twiddle that! No idea why it's not recognising the external unless that's a
limit of being on trial?
