Many thanks for the explanation!

I think the mystery has now been solved. As it turns out, Thunderbird has had
your email address stored in my Address Book for years under "John Hill", and
it has been quietly substituting that name whenever your posts arrive.

So, despite my efforts to investigate hidden headers, obscure Usenet
behaviour, and possible Usenapp oddities, the culprit was my own Thunderbird
installation all along!

Your account of the transition from "John Hill" to "Old John" also makes
perfect sense. The Address Book entry must date back to those earlier days and
has simply never been updated.

I must say, your signature seems particularly apt in this case:

"Classic computing: Computers do what you tell them to do, not what you want
them to do."

Thunderbird was faithfully doing exactly what I told it to do years ago. The
problem was that I had completely forgotten giving it the instruction!

Thank you for helping unravel the puzzle, and congratulations on maintaining
such a remarkable Usenet presence over the years. There can't be many people
left who can say they were there at the founding of uscm (ucsm) and are still
posting regularly today.
