Can anyone think of an easier way to get a filename into the paste buffer
than to right click it in a file chooser, select 'Rename', then CTRL-C?

(Mint 17/MATE is it makes any difference.)

MATE uses the Caja file mangler by default, and that is based on the
Nautilus from Gnome2. That allowed you to add scripts to the right click
menu by placing them in the appropriate folder. If this functionality
has made it through the transformation to Mint MATE, you would be able
to use a script like this along with xclip to get the full filename
(including path) into the clipboard:

<start of file>
#! /bin/bash

# Uses xclip which is not installed by default

URL="$PWD/$@"
echo "$URL" | xclip -i -selection "clipboard"
<eof>

If you don't want the full pathname, just the filename, remove $PWD/
from the URL= line.

On the Caja I have here the location for the script files is:
~/.config/caja/scripts

I have a load of other small scripts to do assorted other things from
the right click scripts menu in Caja.
