Its been thought through.

O2 is two oxygen atoms in a single molecule. So its molecular weight is 32 amu.

A mole of gas at STP is 22.4 litres. That's 32 grams for 22.4 liters. So, 500 litres is 714.3 grams of oxygen per day per person. Actual figures developed from experience at the 95th percentile is 686 grams per day. SO, you've over-stated the requirement rather dramatically.

Stuff and nonsense.

No, its 4,802 litres per day.

> your N2 flow rate is 15,000 liters per day (assume a 25% O2)

Nonsense. Nitrogen is not consumed. So, it doesn't have to be recharged, merely filtered.

> and about 7.5 liters of water per day per person

Direct consumption is 0.4 litres per day and 2.1 litres to reconstitute food. That's 2.5 litres per day, so you've over-stated the requirement 3x here.

> so how many tons rocks do you cook per day ?

You don't cook rock to recycle any of these materials. You process wastes. Like they do on nuclear subs and aboard the space station.

> How much energy is needed to run the rock cooking plant?

On Mars, zero. Because you're recycling waste water and CO2 into clean water and oxygen.

> What type of rocks work for O2 that are on the surface ?

On Mars you compress the oxygen and nitrogen found in the atmosphere.  As described here;

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20141013141644-39571567-there-s-plenty-of-air-on-mars

There's plenty of water on Mars

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Kj8a2v4VfY

On the moon, there's plenty of water at the poles.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYW4rTrAA5I

>

From the waste excreted by the astronauts themselves.

No water is lost.

You use dehumidifiers.

> how do you reprocess the salt bath used for cooking the rocks ?

> What rocks do you cook to get N2 ???

Nitrogen on Mars is no problem.

So, nitrogen on the moon's surface is 280 grams per cubic meter. Very rare stuff.

Its likely more concentrated in deeper rocks, but we don't know that for sure right now. Even so, experts guess it because the surface get baked by the sun which drives things like nitrogen out.

Even so, even at these very low densities, a 5 meter deep atmosphere at sea level pressure on the moon requires 17 meters of rock be processed beneath for each square meter of pressurised surface.

Once that is done, you don't need to process any more, because you recycle the nitrogen. Now, a benefit of this process is that you get ALL the stuff out along with the nitrogen, so you've got everything you need to build ANYTHING using additive techniques.

http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu//full/1962PASP...74..316P/0000316.000.html

Mars is far easier for the reasons already cited.

Stupid people will always try to inhabit stupid places for stupid reasons.
Access to technology that makes it easier to do so only makes the problem

Perhaps I should have said the vast majority of people wouldn't bother
attempting to colonize airless, barren rocks.

There will always be hermits in one form or another, but a colony implies
a community with families and kids.

If Star Trek technology did exist, there are currently several million
refugees in Europe that would jump at the chance to colonize somewhere
else, but not an airless, barren rock.

That’s another non-statement. Whether settling new frontiers is easy or
difficult, it has never been something the “vast majority” did. All it
takes is enough of them to do it, and survive, and spread.

Nonsense. If you have Trek tech, it won’t be airless and barren for
long. Or, hell, the whole habitat could be nothing but a holodeck!

Your solutions lack imagination.

Note that even in Star Trek, the coloies were agrarian, they did very
little in the way of terraforming, and when they did, they didn't
start with airless rocks.

Which ideas are those, chimp? You're the one who seems childish, at

Childish in thinking that women would want to raise children on a barren,
lifeless rock.

Childish in thinking very many people would want to spend their lives
in what would amount to a buried submarine.

Depends on the technology they bring with them.  Here's an illustration from a 1950s study by Dandridge Cole, a visionary aerospace engineer that suffered a heart attack at the age of 44 back in 1965;

http://www.fabiofeminofantascience.org/RETROFUTURE/cole1small.jpg

Based on a personal conversation (in an auditorium of aerospace engineers at the Ohio State University back in the 1970s) It was Dandridge Cole who inspired Gene Rodenberry's visionary ideas;

AIAA papers are better references than Gene Rodenberry and his writers, who read those AIAA papers to get ideas for future space operations.

http://settlement.arc.nasa.gov/LewisOne/lewisOnePaper.pdf

Qualified and credentialed people who have looked at the problem say It depends on the primary energy source and method of transport. If the primary energy source is solar, then you'd make use of anything that had a lot of solar energy. If the primary energy source is nuclear, then you'd make use of anything that had a lot of nuclear fuel around.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWplCf4fuKM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtC53-qBfqI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu_elkk3hx8

A nation like Monaco has about 62.5 square meters per person and about 625 tons of material per person. The air for a 5 meter (16.4 ft) deep atmosphere has 4.76 kg of nitrogen and 1.28 kg of oxygen and 0.06 kg of water vapour per square meter. Compared to 10,000 kg of machinery, housing, belongings, plants animals and hardscaping per square meter, the atmosphere is as nothing.

It takes 45 megajoules of energy to turn a kilogram of rock or anything, into elemental plasma. This assumes no recovery of the energy uses which is unlikely. In practice, 80% of the energy can be recovered quite easily from a charged plasma curent. So, real figures are on the order of 9 megajoules of energy per kilogram of rock. However, not 100% of the rock is used. But 100% of the rock must be vaporised to make use of the stuff in it. So if we use 20% of the stuff in rock and we recover 80% of the energy from the plasma line, and recycle it, we still spend 45 megajoules of energy per kilogram of useful stuff around us. So, 625 tonnes per person across 62.5 square meter (16,000 people per square kilometer, the same density as Monaco) we have 28.125 TJ of energy. The equivalent of 4,610 barrels of crude oil. 891 megawatts of power complete a square meter of colony every 8 hours.

So, why vaporise rock with a solar pumped laser in this way? Because by doing so we create a high current time of flight mass spectrometer that efficiently separates each specie of atom and using additive manufacturing techniques, we can recombine those atoms into anything we like.

Thin film solar powered systems that cover 16 sq meters for each kilogram of material in the solar pumped laser system, collect 9,000 Watts on Mars when the sun shines, and process enough material to make another 16 sq meter of collector in 5,000 seconds. This is three replications per Mars rotation. So, we have 8 kg of panels, covering 128 sq meters after deploying the first kg of panels covering 16 sq meters.

This consists of a 4.5 meter diameter (14.8 ft diameter) sphere made of thin film formed to focus sunlight on to a small IC like device that processes CO2 and soil into useful products, doubling every 1.38 hours, of sunlight.

In 14 days the entire surface of Mars is covered with these collectors generating 1.26x10^15 Watts of power. At 28.125 TJ per person this is sufficient to build infrastructure at a rate of 45.1 persons per second transforming the martian surface at a rate of 2,631 sq meters per second. That's 1.43 billion per year. That's 89,375 sq km per year.

Ignoring the problem of transport of people from Earth for a minute, this 1 kg solar powered machine would first spread across the entire surface of Mars, surveying every square inch as it grew to collect enough sunlight, and then feed its energy to spots chosen for their resources. After the system grew to meet the needs of all, the collectors would then die back, to whatever was required to maintain growth.

At 16,000 people per square kilometer, 7.4 billion people require a total of 462,500 sq km of built up area as described.  Of course with 1.3% growth rate, we have need of enlarging this area over time.  Here is what we have;

Year	Earth	Mars	Sq Km Power

2017	7,400	1,430 89,375	100.00%
2018	6,066	2,879	179,912	101.30%
2019	4,715	4,346	271,626	50.98%

So, you can see that we cover the entire planet, and keep it covered to collect sunlight to power expansion, for two years, then it falls off as shown, and by the 7th year, the planetary collector dissolves, returning to native conditions.

Now, the transfer of people from Earth to Mars can take place by putting people in stasis on the ground, and sending them to a built up city on Mars. They are pushed into a Hohman transfer orbit using a photonic thruster on orbit, when the planets are in alignment every 2.1 years. It takes 296 days to travel to Mars along a minimum energy orbit, and some people might have to stay asleep in orbit for up to 2.1 years waiting for alignment to occur. So, it takes from 1 to 3 years for settlers to get to Mars, and they all get to Mars around the same time every 2.1 years. They are awakened in their own bed by their own AI on Mars.

The average weight of an adult male is 76 kg world wide. So, on average, a 53 ton payload with added material, is 98 kg per person. 540 people per launch. With reusable rockets that cost $100 million to build, and are used 200 times, it costs $500,000 to launch - and another $200,000 fuel operate and repair. It takes 2 hours for all the parts and pieces to come back, another 2 hours for repair and refueling of those parts and pieces. So, 6 flights every 24 hours per vehicle. $700,000 divided by 540 persons is an average ticket price of $1,296.26 - 3,240 per day per vehicle.

With 200 flight cycles per vehicle, and 6 flights per day, each vehicle lasts a month.

A highly reusable vehicle that sustains 2400 flights, lasts a year, and costs $242,000 per launch. $448.15 per seat.

To launch 1.43 billion to orbit in this way requires 7253 flights per day which requires 1243 vehicles be operational. And if highly reusable as defined above, requires 100 vehicles need to be produced per month!

With launches and landings taking place at the same rate as they do at O'Hare, 3,800 flight operations per day - we have need for two launch centers of the size and complexity of O'Hare to support 1.43 billion per year leaving Earth.

One in Texas, one in Ukraine, would be interesting. These would operate at full capacity for about 7 years, and then be trimmed back considerably.

Placing a handful of astronauts on Mars, and implementing the programme above, and then selling people self sufficient fully automated homes on credit, establishes a solid economic basis upon which to enrich humanity on Earth and on Mars while ending our threat to Earth's environment.

Two launch centers with 8 launch pads and 8 landing pads, with a three part Falcon heavy, each site launches a full vehicle every 6 minutes and lands a spent vehicle every 2 minutes. 20 vehicles are in process on the ground at any one time. 20 vehicles are in flight at any one time - consisting of 60 articles.

A ring of payloads, each with 540 persons on board, 5,561,000 in a parking orbit near GEO, are dispatched over a one month period once every 2.1 years. A similar number arrive at Mars 7 months later every 2.1 years. 48 locations across the Martian surface receive ships at a rate of 3800 per day during these peak times, for an entire month. People are transported to their homes and awakened.

In the months preceding departure, people interact online with AI that controls the construction of products on Mars. They design their homes, their furnishings, their clothing, and other belongings, and arrive to take ownership of them. They also profile and choose their neighbours and location as well as their food preferences and medical needs.

Each pays out of pocket costs for them and their families, of about $500 each. They borrow from the bank of Mars to pay for all the products they consume. They are assigned training and work accordingly, or have their own business plans approved by the Martian AI. About 15% of the people arriving operate under their own business plans. 35% operate as employees of these businesses another 35% under direction of AI. 15% are rejected and taken only under terrestrial cooperative programs where government programs pay for them. Such include work release programs for convicted criminals or medical programs both of which seek to develop relationships with powerful AI to assist each individual in making better choices in their lives and become more fully integrated with society as a consequence.

Moving beyond Mars to the asteroid belt beyond, we build Bishop Ring colonies - these are open air colonies that are about 2000 km in diameter and 600 km wide. 6,200 of them are built from the four largest asteroids in the asteroid belt. Ceres, Vesta, Hygeia, Pallas, and each house between 1 and 2 million persons in fabulous estates of 1000 acres each.

Well, except for movie two. Did they ever reuse that tech after that?

Nope, in movie three the crew was ordered to never talk about the device
and it was implied that part of the device was made with something either
illegal or unethical and anything made with it would be unstable.

Protomatter was a highly dangerous, unstable form of matter in the Trek trope.

According to the Trek legends, protomatter's hazardous properties led to its denunciation by most 23rd century scientists, but this did not stop David Marcus from secretly using it while trying to solve certain fundamental problems inherent in the Project Genesis matrix.

Translating from the TV trope to reality, we can say that self-replicating machine systems have the potential to wreak havoc and become uncontrollable in a similar way - in what has been called "The Grey Goo Problem" - however, Drexler, who wrote the original paper on the topic, says concerns about grey goo are overstated.

http://nanotechweb.org/cws/article/indepth/19648

A system that self replicates to form self replicating solar collectors that cover 16 square meters per kilogram, and require the collection of 45 megajoules of sunlight to extract needed materials from five kilograms of rock to produce another kilogram of solar collectors, we can calculate the reproductive rate of such panels at various distances from Sol.

Object	Distance	Watts/kg Minutes	sq km hours tons/second

Mercury 0.387	146,145.06 5.13	74,859,848.00	14.40	3,798,749.04
Venus	0.723	41,872.56	17.91	460,616,170.00	53.39	6,696,936.40
Earth	1.000	21,888.00	34.27	510,384,490.00	102.47	3,878,922.12
Luna	1.000	21,888.00	34.27 37,900,000.00	93.90	288,040.00
Mars	1.524 9,424.02	79.58 144,924,311.00	228.36	474,225.50
Diemos	1.524 9,424.02	79.58 495.00	132.02	1.62
Phobos	1.524 9,424.02	79.58 11.27	103.07	0.04
Ceres	2.768 2,856.76	262.54 2,770,000.00	653.42	2,747.65

Mercury replicates a panel every 5 minutes, Earth and Moon require over half an hour. Mars over an hour. Ceres over 4 hours. The entire surface of Mercury is covered with panels in 14.4 hours. It takes thousands to millions of years to chew through the entire body of a planet, if that were possible. Putting solar collectors off world and beaming energy back to the planet bound machinery is another approach. This can reduce planets to machine parts in less than a year.

“Even”? Star Trek is a work of fiction created with a particular
storytelling purpose. I’m asking you to imagine how things would work
in a *realistic* future where humans have access to that essentially
unlimited energy. Given what we’re doing right here on Earth with
merely plentiful energy and only semi-magical technology, I don’t see
it playing out like it did in Trek.

We wouldn't need to fight over resources so all we would have left to
fight over would be religion, race, and sexual orientation.

I think you underestimate the trivialities that humans will go to in order
to fabricate an enemy to fight.  Sports teams, mobile phones, text editors;
every insignificant issue is on the table when it comes to manufacturing
hatreds in a world of unlimited resources. Again, it’ll be *worse*, not
better. Imagine a version your petty bickering with Fred in a future where
powerful energy weapons are readily available.

Sam Colt made a powerful energy weapon readily available a long time ago.

States tend to fight over different things then individuals.

And it is still constantly used to kill people over petty matters. Please
think about your responses before you make them! :-) The issue is the
*humans*, not the force multiplier.

> States tend to fight over different things then individuals.

States are run by people in power, and so they still tend to fight over
individuals wants . . . just not *your* individual wants.
