Who said anything about "forests, lakes and rivers"? You said

And if you do find something of great value off planet, the increased
supply will depress the market so that is no magic bullet either.

So the only source of ROI so far as you're concerned is raw materials?
That's just a little stupid, Chimp.

Nope, there is also raw stock and finished goods but I doubt Mars could
compete with China.

I know for sure they won't be able to compete with Japan on plywood.

Martian mink fur?

Martian saffron?

Martian woven rugs?

Don't forget shipping costs.

100 tons of rock on Earth contain $85 worth of precious materials.

100 tons of rock on Asteroids contain $12,844 of precious materials massing 200 grams.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/01/130122-interactive-asteroid-mining-metal-abundance/

It takes 4.5 TJ to process 100 tons of rock down to elemental form, and separate them by time of flight mass spectrometry, assuming no recovery of the energy expended.

For Earth crossing asteroids it takes about 2 km/sec to impart velocity to take it back to Earth eventually. So, to send 1 kg of material back to Earth requires 2 MJ extracted from 500 tons processed, using a photonic thruster and the same solar pumped laser used to mine the material. This is a small amount of the 22.5 TJ required to process the 500 tons.

To send 1 kg of material, worth $64,220 material per year back to Earth, requires 713,000 Watts of power. At 22,000 Watts per kg of solar collector, we have 32.4 kg of payload arriving at the asteroid for every kg of precious material per year over the lifetime of the equipment. So, a 32.4 ton payload retrieves 1 ton per year of precious metals worth $64,220,000 per year. Such a payload costing $64.22 million to build and launch, retrieves 100% per year over 30 years. A monumental rate of return!

208 tons of palladium. 283 tons of platinum. 67.9 tons of other rare metals. Terrestrial production is replaced with about 500 satellites of 32.4 tonnes each.

http://www.indexmundi.com/en/commodities/minerals/platinum-group_metals/platinum-group_metals_t5.html

Of course for each metric ton there are thousands of metric tons of other materials that will be reduced to elemental plasma, separated efficiently from the precious metal stream, and available to use reactive vapor deposition to make anything of value which can also be sent back along with the precious metals. At about 100x the rate the precious metals are returned. 500 tons of precious metals per year combined with 50,000 tons of less precious metals per year. Say, Lithium, or Beryllium. Gold, or Silver.

3,000 tons of gold each year would be awesome as would 30,000 tons of silver each year. Musk requires 50,000 tons of lithium metal each year to sustain his planned production of low cost electric vehicles.

Also, with automated solar powered assembly and production applied to the materials not returned, finely crafted materials can be crafted to add value and returned - depending on their value. Akin to Swiss watches from space.

Of course thousands of tons of material are also processed that cannot be returned. These are too heavy to transport, but not too heavy to process in situ! So, for every 625 tons of material, a permanent habitat might be offered to a lucky buyer. 100s of people per year might spend a few hundred thousand to find the ultimate getaway - a self sufficient homestead on a remote space colony far from the madding crowd. The cost to get there doesn't need to be that expensive, especially with reusable rockets.

A 53 ton payload on orbit, translates to a 53 ton take off weight from LEO that imparts a hyperbolic excess velocity of 2 km/sec to meet up with an Earth crossing asteroid. This requires a delta vee of 3.48 km/sec. A LOX/LNG rocket with a 3.8 km/sec exhaust speed must contain 60% propellant. So that's 31.8 tons of a 53 ton payload leaving 21.2 tons of useful load and inert mass. This is enough to send 200 people to an asteroid. People are orbited in stasis, wait for the asteroid to be at the right spot, and then sent there. They arrive and land on the asteroid, and are awakened. The ship is returned filled with cargo.

Houses are built to spec, ahead of time, and maintained by self replicating utility fog.

http://www.nanotech-now.com/utility-fog.htm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXpkG93KzdY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3IhGZY0TCE

Now with highly reusable ships, that are used 150 times, and a $61 million construction cost, we have launch costs on the order of $500,000. Dividing by 200 people across that figure that's $2,500 per person. With photonic propulsion returning products to Earth on a regular basis, people living on the asteroid can even go back and return on a regular basis.

This model also works for the moon's of Mars, Diemos and Phobos, and for Mars itself. It may even work for the surface of the moon. Though higher delta vee requirements mean that costs are slightly higher and flow rates lower.

A highly reusable version of the Falcon Heavy would take as little as 4 hours to recover and reuse. This translates to 6 launches per day. So, in less than 90 days, 500 Earth crossing asteroids would be up and running, each returning 1 ton of precious metals and 100s of tons of other cool stuff each year. Meanwhile, 10,000s tons each year is processed into spec built homes for 100s of people per asteroid - 50,000 people per year.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Earth-crossing_minor_planets
http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/asteroids/collisions.html
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/images/geographos.html

There are dozens of asteroids passing near Earth every week. So, this could happen relatively quickly.

Fred is more of a "what happens on Mars, stays on Mars" sort of fella.
He would love an environment free from the all the stupid rules he has
to follow. No lawyers, no courts, no oversight, just a wide-open
horizon of possibilities as far as he can see.

Long duration biosuits, with a capacity to hold its occupant in stasis, and allow survival for up to 30 days, when combined with a small quantity of self replicating machine systems, open the solar system to the adventurous. Total mass, 150 kg for the average adult male, whose body weight is half this total. A total mass of 225 kg.

Earth's semimajor axis is 1.000 AU and it takes 1.000 years to orbit the sun. 29.76 km/sec. Its escape velocity is 11.19 km/sec.

Mars semimajor axis is 1.524 AU and it takes 1.881 years to orbit the sun. 23.11 km/sec. Its escape velocity is 5.03 km/sec.

Hohman transfer orbit - (1.000 + 1.524) / 2 = 1.262 AU semimajor axis. 1.418 years to orbit. 0.709 years (259 days) to traverse from perihelion at Earth orbit to apohelion at Mars orbit.

The Vis-Viva equation gives us the speed of an object at a particular distance from the sun, knowing its semimajor axis.

   r = 1.000
   a = 1.262

   V = sqrt( 2/r - 1/a ) = sqrt( 2 - 1/1.262) = 1.09891

Multiplying by 29.76 km/sec this is 32.70 km/sec a difference of 2.94 km/sec. To blast off the surface of Earth with this excess velocity requires

    V = sqrt(  11.19^2 + 2.94^2 ) = 11.57  km/sec.  Accelerating against gravity and air drag adds another 1.4 km/sec to the delta vee required.  So, this is a total of 12.97 km/sec.

Now a chemical rocket using LOX/LNG propellant has an exhaust velocity of 3.8 km/sec. Dividing 12.97 by four stages, obtains a speed per stage, all stages being equal in their capacity of 3.25 km/sec. So, each stage has a propellant fraction of 0.5749 - and an inert fraction of 0.4251 while 8% of the propellant weight is allocated to tankage and rockets, so they constitute 0.0460 of the total weight leaving 0.3791 fraction for useful load.

So, starting with 225 kg we have the following for four stages;

     225.00	inert	propellant
     593.51 27.30 341.21
   1565.58 72.01 900.06
   4129.73	189.96	2374.18
10893.50	501.10	6262.67

http://global.jaxa.jp/projects/engineering/components/lng/index.html
http://enu.kz/repository/2009/AIAA-2009-5138.pdf

WIth a 3.8 to 1.00 Oxygen Fuel ratio, and LOX density 1.14 kg/litre whilst LNG is 0.464 kg/litre we have 0.875 kg/litre. So, three tanks, 1 meter in diameter and 5.65 meters long (3.28 ft x 18.5 ft) each mass 190 kg and carry 3,131.33 kg of propellant. These take off and are recovered at the launch center. Tow outboard boosters fire first, and then the central booster.

The fourth stage is a 907 mm diameter sphere attached to the suit. The third stage is a 1000 mm diameter tank that's 1644 mm long - attached to the suit as well. These tanks supply MEMS based suit propulsion which accelerates the astronaut to the desired escape speed in the desired direction.

Once that speed is attained, the astronaut is put into stasis for the 296 day duration of the trip.

https://labs.fhcrc.org/roth/

A day before arrival, the astronaut is awakened and goes through a series of exercises. He/she then maneuvers to enter the Martian atmosphere, and lands using the last bit of propellant.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q971MCu8MyY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JjCS2uciXo

Once on the surface of Mars, the astronaut then releases 5 kg of self replicating utility fog. The landing location is chosen to be in the morning, and over a 12 hour period the machine cells use atmospheric carbon dioxide and water found in the soil to double their mass every 30 minutes - 24 doubling periods - which increase their mass from 5 kg to 83,866 tons. This forms a temporary shelter, as the self replicating robot swarms begin processing soil in addition to air.

To return to Earth requires only the second and third stage mounted in line as a single central rocket with an upper stage. Which is made by the self replicating utility fog the astronaut brought along.

Another 5 kg are animal and plant cells from over 2000 varieties - which are cultivated in machinery built by the utility fog. These cells replicate every 33 hours or less. They are harvested and used to recharge the storage unit. They are then continually harvested to provide food, textiles, leathers, wood, paper and natural drugs and ointments and any other organic products for the astronaut. The cells are harvested, glued together with organic glues, seasoned, cooked, and assembled in a 3D food printer, or a 3D fabric printer or a 3D product printer - which is really the same device. Rather than conventional printers of this day, these printers are in spider like print heads that work in fog like swarms to rapidly produce any product on demand.

In a setting where a multitude of high tech systems needs to be constantly
monitored and maintained to survive more than a few minutes, I think the
societal structure would be more like a miltary post than a hippy love in.

So you think our current society, where a multitude of high tech
systems needs to be constantly monitored and maintained to survive
more than a few minutes, has a societal structure like a military
post? Wow. Just wow.

It's funny that a known lunatic like Uncle Steve (and I mean that just
like it sounds; he actually is mentally ill) spews some delusion and
you pick right up on it and act like it's fact, but when confronted
with facts you insist they're not true.

Trudge on back to your cave, Chimp...

Last I looked there was a more than adequate supply of air on Earth,
space cadet.

Or are you one of those people that can't survive more than a few minutes
without their iPhone?

I never heard of Uncle Steve unless you are talking about the character
Steve Martin plays in his comedy act.

Water goes down. What do you do? Without outside supply you have
less than a day before you die of dehydration.

Food into New York City goes down. What do you do? Without resupply
you have a week before you starve to death.

Rule of thumb, bucko. Six minutes without air, six hours without
water, six days without food...

Nope.

I see you also know nothing about human survival.

The rule of thumb is 3,3,3.

That is the normal healthy adult under average conditions dies after 3
minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 months without food.

> Food into New York City goes down. What do you do? Without resupply

Nope, a couple of months.

> Rule of thumb, bucko. Six minutes without air, six hours without
> water, six days without food...

Absolutely wrong; see above.

Like I have said before, you know little about the human condition.

How long could a farmer in colonial America go without utilities and
resupply?

Years.

Bullshit. You have great 20/20 hindsight, which I guess isn't
surprising, what with your head up your ass like that and all. Your
foresight, on the other hand, is pretty much nonexistent. I guess
your stomach gets in the way.

Nope, farming communities by definition are pretty self sufficient and have
been since antiquity.

Just what supplies do you think a farmer needs?
