Assuming you have an antenna large enough to get any signal back, which
so far is not in evidence.

And it also means it is pointless to send any commands at all after a
certain distance.

That's why they would need to have some remote viewers on board to communicate instantly telepathically with Earth.  I'm sure Hawking must already have all this worked out in his mind.
