the article pokes fun at people, however it is purely an financial decision.

The electricity generated by the solar panels will never exceed the cost 
of the solar panels + installation costs, over a 30 year period.

the US Gov indicates that solar panels will only last 30 years, then 
have to be replaced.

does it take 3000 gallons of water to make one solar panel ?
  How much water does it take to keep it clean for 30 years ?
