Sam, you didn't need to make such a lengthy reply.  In the hypothetical situation where a spaceship is traveling close to c, collision with atoms in space are sometimes referred to as "virtual cosmic rays", because at the speed the ship would be traveling, the speed of those atoms relative to the ship would pack the same energy as real cosmic rays observed here on Earth.
