I am not a fan of the Registry, but users should not have to fiddle with TXT or XML configuration files. Programs should be written better than that! >> What makes you think a user has the obligation to back YOUR wishes? > > The user has an obligation to learn about computers and digital principles. Knowing you should learn about computers is a good first step. I commend you. > Then maybe we could have an OS that wasn't geared for brain-dead morons. You have yet to say how it is. Or OS X. If you watch my videos, though, you can see where Linux is, if not for, often designed by "brain-dead morons". :) In all seriousness: use what you like and there are times when Linux is a great solution for the desktop. But that is also true of Windows and OS X. Heck, Windows is a great choice for most users - as is OS X, though it is priced in a way where it will never have the majority. Desktop Linux, even being no-cost, has yet to attract any but a tiny sliver of users. I would love to see the open source ecosystem improve to the point where it can compete well and earn a larger percentage of user. That would be great and I have submitted many bug reports to help it move forward. >> Not only do I use such characters, I also use unicode characters in my file >> names. In the digital world, such behavior is extremely bad form. You do not have to use such names if you do not want... but nothing wrong with others doing so. >> Would love to see what type tasks you think your system handles well. Fair enough. Would love to see them. But keep in mind part of a great system is it allows you to do such things with little planning. The print solutions I show, for example, take almost no planning to do the basics with. I have added a script so I can change the name of the file I email (would be great if I could just select it and rename it in Mail, but I cannot). One thing I really appreciate about OS X is how it is designed to streamline workflows and give you many choices. > I have done so in the past for many complex problems. I am sure... but a good system should not just let you find excellent solutions to complex problems but also more mundane ones, such as the email an edited lesson plan task I talk about. I do such things often - heck, did so today with a home school group I am in. Someone had posted a link to their own blog with lessons and I sent them a copy with notes on ideas to improve it. They emailed me back and thanked me - and made some changes to their blog. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

And here is a discussion on how to use this folder with PDF Services: <http://lowendmac.com/2014/os-x-tip-save-pdf-to-web-receipts-folder/> They also discuss a BIG bug, in my view, with what Apple provides - it can overwrite a file with the same name. OUCH! Bad form Apple. I have updated mine so this cannot happen with a fairly simple script. Did the same with a few other folders I use often. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

Directories are filesystem locations, of which a folder can be a graphical representation of, but a folder can also be virtual and not related to a filesystem location (think "smart folders" that are really filesystem queries). -- Sandman

Fabian_Russell,
To change settings (in the Resigistry)
I edit this _Plain_Text_ file:
Jeff-Relf.Me/Win_8_.REG.TXT
Registry items can be exported/imported
to/from a text file.
_______
Copy this line to your browser:
Jeff-Relf.Me/My Biological Son, Jeff Thompson .JPG
It works, and it's easy to read.
But, on Usenet, using underscores (instead of spaces)
makes it easier for people to view/click it; to wit:
Jeff-Relf.Me/_The_Heisenberg_Uncertainty_Principle_.PNG
_____
Plenty of non-idiots use Windows, by the way.
Here's some code I wrote for Windows 8:
Jeff-Relf.Me/X.ZIP
"X.HTM" is the "help/settings file".
"Nyms.HTM" is the Usenet Scorefile.
The "xGames" folder has .PNG files for the Monopoly game.
"X.CPP" is the source code, Visual C++, x64, Visual Studio 2015.
"OCR A", "MS Mincho", "DejaVu LGC Sans Mono" and "nSimSun"
are the (required) "Unicode Console" fonts.
If they don't exist, warnings are issued using "Consolas" ( Vista ).
Note: This code needs Windows 8 or later.
3840 x 2160 ScreenShots: "Jeff-Relf.Me/X.PNG", "Jeff-Relf.Me/Chess.PNG".
"DirectX.CPP" is a small (one-file) example of how to:
_ Make all Fonts/Glyphs the same width (double_width is allowed).
_ Rescale Graphics/Glyphs when a window changes size.
_ Use DirectX 11.1, Direct2D 1.1, DirectWrite, and Direct3D.
_ Draw to a back buffer at a high fps (frames per second).
_ Draw properly scaled/smoothed .JPG files, hardware accelerated.
_ Draw to/from/within bitmaps.
_ Discover if a font exists or not ("FindFamilyName()").
_ Discover if a glyph exists in a font ("HasCharacter()").
_ Discover the width/height of a glyph ("GlyphWH()").
Your startup folder should have, e.g., "Pics/LowRes.JPG" ( 100px wide/tall )
and "Pics/Chess.PNG" ( a 3840 x 2160 screenshot, Jeff-Relf.Me/Chess.PNG ).
All coordinates are in hard⋅pixels (D2D1_UNIT_MODE_PIXELS).
ScreenShot: Jeff-Relf.Me/Glyph.PNG

First, not true, as even you note below. And it really does not matter one whit given how must users have no need or desire to know what a "command line parser" is. > They must either be quoted or escaped. > > The point is that in a FUNDAMENTAL DIGITAL SENSE, a file name > is meaningful only w/o spaces. So you are making a point which is not in any way true. OK. The challenge then is for you to figure out how to learn and move past that error, or if you really think it is a reasonable claim, explain why so many files and folders with spaces in their names come with computers! In the end you have a preference. Fine. You are welcome to it. And for some cases you are correct: things like file names on the web, for example, should not have spaces. Then again, when we get to the web we get to case sensitivity... another whole can of worms. Heck, for the different parts of a URL, and for different servers, the rules are not always the same! Utter insanity there. :) -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

The OS also keeps backup copies of the registry and I have to say out of the 100's of workstations we maintain I can't recall one single one of them failing due to registry corruption. I even went through our ticket system and found no reports or resolutions that required registry repairs. Why in particular with operating systems (Particularly Linux) is it deemed a requirement to know every detail of how it works just to do a simple task? Why is it OK not to know how your DVD player works before you use it?

Instead of storing settings, preferences and configuration data all over the place you put it all into one centralized mini-database. Basically, think of something like SQLite to store all this in one place. I don't think data integrity is the problem. It's needless complexity. The problem is that Microsoft screwed the pooch in their implementation. It's way, way too complicated for what it needs to be. I literally have several 100's of keys like: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\4A191448F4F0161448230045E3B993CB that have one single REG_SZ entry of "C7FAF248FE053644B9F826221E83D4D7" that is set to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Lib\x64\msdrm.lib" This part is crazy. If they just kept it simple then it wouldn't be the complicated mess that exists today.
