Ever actually used a crescent wrench?  The ends are angled to allow more 
choices in orienting the wrench when attaching it to a nut or bolt-head.  
In tight spaces one can flip the wrench over when it's opposite end bumps 
into some obstacle.

This is a weird question.  Have you ever actually *used* wrenches much?

They're made that way because it makes them more useful to the people who 
have to use them regularly.

   Exactly. Assuming enough room to rotate a hex bolt or nut 30°, then an
   offset of 15° in the open end wrench will allow (flipping the wrench
   over) an additional 30° of rotation totaling 60°.

   An excellent design using a 15° offset in open end wrenches, for hex
   bolts and nuts. Simple mathematics really.

Which raises the question: Ever see those huge wrenches in some big 
industrial plant? I mean they are like a meter long and made from 
drop-forged steel about an inch thick! I can't even lift one off the 
ground, which makes me wonder just what kind of gorillas they hire to 
use tools like that?

Now I do own a gigantic pipe wrench but then common pipes do get to be 
larger diameters. It looks just like a huge industrial wrench but it's 
actually made out of aluminum and quite light and usable by normal human 
beings.

  I've handled them by myself. CAREFULLY. They're typically in the fifty to sixty pound range. I'm 6' 0" and 145 lbs (of rawhide and whalebone, as they never really used to say). With proper training and practice (and steel-toed Red Wing boots just in case) it's easier and safer than you might think.

  I'm in production- not the offices. My "desk" runs on 3-phase 440VAC and can hit 450 Fahrenheit depending on what resin we're using that day.

  It's got replaceable steel jaws though, doesn't it?

  The forged steel monsters you mentioned are also being phased out in favor of steel-jawed aluminum. They're more expensive but much safer to use.

  Since I'm now in my 60's I don't mind the change at all. ;>)

screw head.

There are different types of screw head.  A common type is the
"Phillips" head.  Another common type is the "Torx" head.

Do you know the difference between a Phillips and a Torx head,
beside the appearance?

Well, a Phillips head is designed "cam out," that is, too much
applied torque will literally push the driving bit out of the head.
A Torx head is designed never to "cam out."

Would you care to explain, Mr. High Horse, in terms of force vectors,
just how these respective designs lead to the respective behaviors?

But Mr. High Horse feels that such trivialities are not worth
serious attention.  Too bad.

How about the difference between a recessed hex head (i.e. for
fitting an Allen wrench) and a star-lobed head?  Would you car
to explain, in terms of forces, why one is preferable over the
other?

But again, Mr. High Horse can't be bothered with such trivial
nonsense.

Simple tools are far from simple.  You intellectual shallowness
creates a severe prejudice.
