Not the same thing at all. Satellites spin around the earth once every hour and a half. The moon spins around the earth once a month. The earth spins at neither of these rates. -- Odd Bodkin — Maker of fine toys, tools, tables

john <johnsefton288@gmail.com> writes: >MM >Or better yet, Mike! >Find a Galaxy that doesn't spin- it will have a non-spinning black hole!! >Hahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahaha That is completely different. The individual stars must orbit since if they don't, they'll fall straight into the center. (note that if the stars have orbits aligned at random, there will be no net rotation of the galaxy. I believe elliptical galaxies and globular clusters are like this) The fact is the orbiting stars orbit has no effect on whether any central massive black hole rotates. As Odd pointed out, low orbiting earth satellites orbit the Earth once every 90 minutes but that doesn't mean the earth rotates once every 90 minutes. So yes, it's certainly possible that a spiral galaxy with zillions of orbiting stars could have a non-rotating black hole at its center.

So tell us how is your "John Logic" is different from "It's True Because I Said So!" (And which galaxy has the 50 billion stars per arm, and how many stars are currently between the arms?)

MM "Can you at least how many stars are between the arms of this galaxy? " Nobody can. Could be none; the stars in the arms are obviously together, but any single stars going this way or that could be way in front or way behind.

What about spiral galaxies where the space between the arms is obviously brighter than space outside of the disk? Those brighter areas are full of stars that are obviously part of the galaxy. Remember, this describes most spiral galaxies.
