Seems people over there can either explode at will, or when getting close to crowds and buses. Perhaps you can find out what's the deal with that. I have not been to the second one since about 2000... so if you have been more recently then it could have changed or, perhaps, we just have different tastes (oh, the horror!). I miss little about Tucson... but I do miss the food. There was Zemam's and Mi Nidito (best Mexican food I have had, other perhaps in Mexico... and even then maybe not), Char's Thai, Govinda's (run by the Hare Krishnas), etc. Where I live now has NOTHING even close. We do most of our own cooking at home -- eating out only rarely. We ended up with a bunch of veggies (already had some and then a friend was moving and gave stuff to us) so have been having a lot of stir fries... non-authentic. Interestingly, because there have been so many Japanese businessmen in the USA, most Japanese restaurants here have pretty authentic food. I first started eating Japanese food in NYC around 1954. I liked and would eat only a handful of things, and almost all of them except ice cream, with ketchup. These days I'm the exact opposite. I eat and like almost everything, and never use ketchup. My wife used to pick me up at the train station (I worked in the city) and we went to a particular Chinese restaurant in the NY suburb where we lived every Friday. One Friday evening I left work late, and by the time we got to the restaurant, it was empty except for a big round table at the back where the staff was eating. I said to the owner, "What are they eating? Why don't we get any of that?" He said "You wouldn't like it; it's real Chinese food." I said "try us." So the next week we had a Chinese tripe dish. For several years we had a different "real" Chinese dish every Friday: tripe, pig's ears, pig stomachs, etc. We always got them in addition to what we ordered and he never charged us for them. Years later he confessed to us that he went to his butcher every Friday morning and asked "What do you have that's weird?"

One opened in my fairly small town a number of years ago. People went wild over it. I went ONCE with a work function. No desire to go back. Had been to other ones years before and it was as horrid as I remembered. Used to be a GREAT one not too far from me -- family owned and operated -- but they closed a few years ago. Sigh. That got me by when I was in Japan for a week in 1987. I used to be able to read and pronounce katakana and three or four kanji characters, but I've forgotten almost all of it.

If this is popular music, I hate almost all of it, and know next to nothing about the singers or songs.

I went to France for a couple weeks with a French teacher and his students... I was in college and hired as an assistant: to help keep the students in line (they did not need it, they were great) and to help with the other adults who did not know the language and culture (as if I did... but many of them were HORRID). I could not understand much that I heard but I found I could figure out the gist of most signs as well as the students who had been studying it for a couple years. If you know English well and can figure out roots and the like you can figure things out. Also had good luck with pantomime and the like to communicate. The idea the French hate Americans is not at all true overall... they hate STUPID Americans who think if you speak English slowly and loudly everyone will understand. One of the funny examples: I used to have long hair at the time... one of the students killed her hair dryer (wrong converter and it burst into flames... scary). We went to a store in Paris to get her a new one. The students knew the word for "hair"... and were shown shampoo and conditioner and gel and clips and who knows what else. I went to a salesperson and just pulled my hair out to the side with one hand and with the other made a hand "gun" and pointed at my head and made blowing sounds. Ok, as I write that it could have sounded like I was going to kill myself or something, but attitude counts for a lot I suppose and she knew immediately what I was looking for. :) I also had some complete and utter failures, such as trying to get decaf coffee... but I shall not talk about those. :) >>> That got me by when I was in Japan for a week in 1987. The bit of the song I was referencing: <https://youtu.be/3cShYbLkhBc?t=3m7s>. From those I know who speak Japanese they mangle it badly. I've been in France eight or nine times. I agree--the French don't hate Americans. But in Paris, if you try to speak to someone and ask a question in English or in French with a heavy English accent, you may find that they have no time to try to help you. That's because Paris is a big city, and typically in a big city, people are in a hurry. The same thing is true of big cities in the US, such as New York. Someone who doesn't speak English or speaks with a heavy foreign accent is likely to get the same result. Reminds me of a story. The first time we went to Paris, I had written down on a piece of paper, in French "My name is Mr. Blake and I have a reservation in your hotel." On the flight, I took it out my pocket umpteen times until I had it strongly memorized. In the morning we arrived at the hotel, and I went to the desk and said "Je m'appel Monsieur Blake et..." The clerk replied "blubllubblublubbl" and I stood there with my mouth hanging open. Dummy that I was, it didn't occur to me that he would reply in French and I would need to understand what he said. He repeated "blubllubblublubbl" and I still didn't know what to say or do. So he answered me one more time: "Yes, and how long will you be staying with us, Mr Blake." He was very patient with me--more patient than I deserved.

But in Paris, if you try to speak to someone and ask a > question in English or in French with a heavy English accent, you may > find that they have no time to try to help you. I would politely ask if they could speak English. About 1 in 4 can. And I had a number of people who wanted to talk with me just to practice their English. But many Americans are expect others to bend over backwards for them... and when people do that they are resented. NOT saying you did... and I did see people spitting in the street and screaming rude things to Americans, but I also saw good reason for the French to not like us, as a whole. > That's because Paris is a big city, and typically in a big city, > people are in a hurry. First time I was there was in my early 20s with a friend... we though everyone was very rude. A local talked to us and let us know you have to get right in someone's face and talk loud and fast. Worked like a charm. It felt rude to me to do that, but it is a part of the culture. > Reminds me of a story. He was very patient with me--more patient > than I deserved. LOL! Understandable. I had a card from one of the hotels I was staying at. One card. I walked around on my own and got lost. It was getting dark. I showed the card I had to a stranger hoping they would help me find the hotel. They took the card and walked away... I was dumbfounded. I literally did not know the name of the hotel (stupid mistake on my part). Thankfully he only walked around the corner to where there was better light so he could read the address on the card. Then he kindly walked me there. I learned to have multiple copies of the card and actually pay attention to names! -- Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity.
