I think c may be like the sound barrier, they used to say it could never be broken!

What some said was that a manned vehicle couldn't break the sound barrier.

That rifle bullets go faster than sound was noticed not too long after
rifles were invented.

Not the same thing as humans going faster. Everybody knows if humans go
faster than sound, they die. That's science.

Yet another blinding insight from Captain Obvious.

Actually the belief was they would likely die as a result of the aircraft
breaking up from the "strange forces" (at that time) that resulted as
one neared Mach 1 such as control reversal.

Which did happen until some design changes were ironed out.
That's the problem with nutjobs like you who go around screaming
"impossible" for everything new. Just say "I"m a moron" and it will be
the same thing.

Some engineers doubted that it would be possible to build a craft that would be controllable at supersonic speeds. That doubt got morphed into "They said the sound barrier couldn't be broken."

This is similar to the notion that "They proved that bumble bees can't fly".
In reality what happened was that in the early days of studying insect flight, they tried applying equations that work well for aircraft. The result gave a value for lift that was less than the bumble bee's weight. From which they concluded that the equations that work well for airplanes are not applicable to insects.

All physics equations are just generalizations anyway.
