Ohmygawd! There must have been a time warp or something! I thought it was

Really, John? You still don't know?

We know how the centers are moving relative to each other in the exact
same way we know that they are rotating, and they are not precessing.
Two Words. Red. Shift.

No, NASA says they are colliding. Since NASA has actual scientists who
know and study such things, I, and most rational people, will believe
them over someone who insists that galaxies violate multiple laws of
physics just to fulfill his OCD demands.

Floundering. That's the word, all right.

In fact, your statement that 'galaxies and atoms just bounce off each other' is borderline insane.

That's just plain stupid, John. Galaxies are mostly empty space and
they'll largely pass through each other. However in doing so, their
mutual gravitation will disrupt each other as well as trigger star
formation. The gravitational disruption usually destroys the spiral
patterns but a new combined galaxy may eventually form.

Gee, Michael, atoms are mostly empty space, also!
Why, then, do you think they act differently?
Because they're small?

It's actually the electromagnetic force that's most relevant for
atoms. The electron clouds and their negative charges interact with
each other. Meanwhile, electromagnetic, strong and weak forces are
essentially irrelevant on a galactic scale, which is why galaxies
interacting and atoms interacting are completely different and have
nothing to do with each other.

No. They behave differently because the electromagnetic interaction
dominates their behavior and is 43 orders of magnitude stronger than the
gravitational interaction. What binds atoms together and also causes
them to repel each other is 43 orders of magnitude bigger than the
interactions that govern galactic collisions.

No, It is because their interactions are dominated by
Maxwell's equations for Electricity and Magnetism.

At the size of a galaxy Electricity and Magnetism
is too small to matter and the interactions are
dominated by Newton's/Einstein's equations of gravity.

You see, the thing is, using those equations to
calculate the interactions matches what scientists
see in the measured data. It is that combination
that provide the solid ground for us saying you
are way off base. It's not our opinion.

When Halton Arp sees two differently-redshifted
galaxies connected by a star-bridge,
the status quo knee-jerk go-to is that
one is actually much
further behind the other.
Same could be claimed
for 'colliding' galaxies- they are not passing
'through' each other- one is simply behind
the other.

You guys have a strange view of galaxies; they
are not a cloud of random stars. They are
a unit.

No, John, galaxies are a gravitationally bound cloud of stars (and
gas, and other stuff like perhaps dark matter). Just like the solar
system, a bunch of planets that have little to do with each other
except for being bound gravitationally to the sun (and perturbing
each other gravitationally somewhat over time)

No, John, they really are a loosely bound cloud of stars, held together
only by their mutual gravitational interactions. The magnetic field is
present but is orders of magnitude too small to bind them together as "a
unit".

No, John. When atoms collide, the outer electrons repel each other
because they are like-signed. You know like signs repel because you've
SEEN it in third grade demonstrations like your hair standing on end
when the hairs are all given a like charge. This repulsion is what
provides a lower bound on the bond length between atoms, so that they
don't just collapse into each other.

Stars do not have that repulsion factor. There is no lower bound that
would cause a bounce, where atoms do have one for an obvious reason.

And before you go on your babble fest about matter and antimatter
repelling, remember that matter and antimatter ATTRACT because they have
opposite charges.

Notice, please, that there is some actual reasoning involved in the
above, rather than just "because that's what they do". That is, it helps
to know WHY atoms bounce off each other, and why galaxies would not have
the same reason to bounce off each other. Plus, there's all that
evidence of galaxies that have suffered collisions and been torn apart
by that interaction rather than just bouncing off intact like atoms do.

So, I imagine that YOU imagine that little balls
that are atoms bounce off each other with
little or no change to their little ball shape.
Maybe they flatten a little, like a golf ball?
Is that how you see it, Odd?
