No, John, Electrons attract positrons because of opposite charges. Protons and antiprotons attract each other for the same reason. As to magnets, for each magnet that has a pole that repels another magnet, there is an exact equal and opposite pole that attracts. The overall effect is generally the poles that attract approach and ones that repel move away, affecting the strengths and the overall effect is to attract each other in total. Get a bunch of small bar magnets, put them in a box, shake, and what do you get? A clump of magnets stuck together. > At least for stars >that have magnetic fields. Maybe white dwarfs >don't have magnetic fields. Yes, they'll attract each other overall. MM " I guess you haven't played with magnets when a kid. Or at least never learned anything from them. " Well, I know the field can only be pointing one way at a time, and I know a wave alternates between crest and trough, so I'm pretty sure that the direction of axis of precession of the molecule can and does point anywhere. The point is only that the wave dynamic is shared in the molecule, like synchronized swimming, not that it is individually different for any one atom. (NOT talking about a mathematical point, Odd.)

Irrelevant, since we're discussing magnets, not retarded precessing spinny things. With magnets, like repels like with the same force as opposites attracting for the same distance. But once like repels and moves away from like and opposites move toward opposites, the overall effect is that magnets will generally attract each other if they are free to move. <snip more retarded spinny thing stuff>

MM So you don't think that the 50 billion IMFs that constitute a galactic arm will act like the metal filings do in a magnetic field, and align with the field lines of the big helical field? How could they not?

How could they not? Simple. The fields are simply too weak compared to gravity/inertia. Odd already pointed out that, based on magnetic fields, the Sun should repel the Earth. It does, but its gravity is much, much, much stronger. Odd also mentioned the inverse square law and how that affects the power of the magnetic fields of the nearest stars on us...

MM "Possibly. But irrelevant. " To know if it's relevant, wouldn't one have to have clue one about why and how it's there?

It's the twisted solar magnetic field "frozen" in the solar wind. The spiral effect is caused by the sun's rotation and the outward motion of the solar wind. This is relevant and interesting because...??

Now you do. > The reason is that Magnets interact. > If you had had a scientific bent, growing up, you > would have played with magnets instead of > wood and already known this. > > Be careful, John. You make a number of oversimplifications. 1. Magnets only attract if opposite poles are closer to each other than like poles. If like poles are closer together, then magnets repel. 2. The magnitude of the force is important. For example, the earth and the sun both have magnetic fields, and they are aligned with like poles being closer together, but you don't see the sun repelling the earth magnetically. The orbit of the earth is completely accounted for by gravity and the magnetic repulsion, though there, is too small to matter. Compare this to your claim that the magnetic fields of neighboring stars would be enough to influence their motion. Stars are 10 billion times further apart than the Earth is from the sun, and the influence falls like the distance squared, so the magnetic influence between NEIGHBORING stars is 100 billion billion times smaller than between the sun and the earth, which is already inconsequential. 3. Iron is not held together magnetically, nor does it fly apart magnetically, even though it is composed of magnetic domains with magnetic alignments all this way and that randomly. You do not see iron BY ITSELF becoming reconfigured by the strength of the magnetic fields of its constituents. So the presence of galactic magnetic fields does NOT mean that arms will behave the way you think they ought to. -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

Odd A wave has a crest and a trough. It's one and then the other. You can't have both at once or it wouldn't be a wave. Therefore, your "everything has to be equal all the time" argument is baloney. Energy flows in patterns. Waves. With regular change.

That's 10^-16 seconds, corresponding to a frequency of 10^16 Hz. That's smack dab in the middle of the UV range. So according to your model, methane radiates UV light constantly. There are a number of other comments that will surely come along that I could imagine people pointing out to you. This only took you -- what? -- a couple months of your time, including two or three dead end attempts, sprinkled in between dope-smoking sessions, a little fishing maybe, and some brainfarts to the newsgroup. So given how willing you are to piss away long stretches of time to produce things that are obviously half-assed, I'm going to guess that you literally have nothing better to do. -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

John with another one of his bathtub meth inspired cartoons that obey no laws of physics. And no offense John but it looks like something from the late 80s or early 90s. I mean... Damn. Aren't you ashamed?
