The erroneous belief in free will is a result of the fact that the realization that free will is an illusion brings no survival advantage and it can bring a survival disadvantage.  Accordingly we should expect it to not be prevalent and to even be a taboo, as is the case.

Well, its easy to take for granted the amount of education (and effort) necessary to even be aware of such.  By the way, there already exists a philosophical movement based on the realizaton (belief) that free will is an illusion: existentialism.
