Sorry about that.
I actually think you're one of the
smartest ones around here.

But, I'm OCD about spinny stuff,
like Michael says,
who I also think is a happening guy.

And Odd, also. Very smart. Knows LOTS.

But what I'm saying is, when you COMBINE
the spins, locking them together at
the start, they will want to STAY locked
together precisely because of what
Michael said- that it takes huge energy
to precess against and CHANGE the rotation.
Think about it like a math problem.
Because EACH POINT is coming back
to the same place after every rotation,
each of those points perceives that
it has been a 'normal' rotation.

I think it is awful cool that we now have the ability to stick genes into
the cytoplasm and introduce new characteristics to living things. Even if
the result is sometimes as silly as glow-in-the-dark kittens. And even if
the technology is not yet good enough to get the genes into the nucleus
where they belong.

I tried to help that boy think straight, but it just isn't working...

If you represent the spin as a vector, then you'll discover that the
vector is the same regardless of which side of the wheel you're looking
at. On one side, the vector points towards you. Move round to the other
side, and now it points away from you.

Put a second wheel beside the first, and spin it in the opposite
direction. It's vector is in the opposite direction to the first, and no
amount of moving around the wheels will make the vectors point in the
same direction.

So it's not just a matter of perspective.

Sylvia.

a 18o-degree rotation of the axis, of course,
not in hte plane perpend. to the axis, though
