There are two states of what which physicists call spin, and physicists call the states up and down. Changing state is simply changing from one state to the other. In some cases, there may be an energy difference between the two. In the other cases there is no energy difference. If there is an energy difference, the energy must be added by, or gets released via a photon.

There are two basic spins: over the top, precess right or over the top, precess left. There are two possible upright axial spins: right or left. Matter could have a top right axial, precessing right. Which would give Antimatter a top left axial, precessing left. The down electron, for matter would then be a left axial-an antimatter electron- precessing right instead of left, and so of negative charge. The down electron for antimatter would be a right axial, but precessing left, so positive.

Intrinic spin is a quantum-mechanical effect which has no macroscopic equivalent. It does have units of angular momentum, however, which is how it got to be called "spin". A bound electron can be in only one of two states of spin. This is described as either +1/2 or -1/2, or, whimsically, "up" or "down". There are no other possible states for an electron. Antimatter has many properties that are the opposite of the corresponding matter particle. Opposite charge, opposite lepton and baryon numbers and so forth. You cannot change a matter particle into its antimatter equivalent without violating conservation of these. For example, an antimatter electron (a positron) has a +1 charge, the opposite of an electron's -1 charge. You cannot convert an electron into a positron without violating conservation of charge. Positrons in bound states (say, an anti-atom) can have "up" or "down" spins just like an electron. There are no other possible states.

Very good criticism John. We hear claims from the quants that their computations are completely accurate and amazing and yet they can't get us to the macro scale and further have to admit the noncomputability of complicated problems. Whether they are practicing science fiction will rely upon a replacement theory which does not absorb the contradictions that they rely upon such as particle/wave duality. I suppose another route will be when they confess that their quantum computer is bullshit. But will they have a revelation as a result? Boy, you are looking at a very serious human relations issue here. I believe that it can be done humanely, but there are going to be plenty of them headed the way of Godel or Newton. I will maintain a portion of doubt on my own claims here, and admit that there is amazing physics at low temperature and (sub)atomic scale. But the discrete quality of the electron spin will eventually be falsified and that admission will go all the way back to Stern/Gerlach. Electron spin is a continuum effect. The quantum computer experiments will ultimately be regarded as a failure. As a result quantum mechanics will regarded as a failure. How long that takes with humans in the mix? There are still humans living by the bible. Let's hope the quants are better than that.

There are definitely things that can be done in quantum mechanical systems that classical physics says are impossible.
