Preliminary analysis says 2008 tenth hottest year on record

Preliminary data released by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)
has said 2008 will likely be the tenth hottest year since records began
in 1850.

The climate information collected by the WMO showed the sea and land
temperatures to be 0.31 degrees Celsius (0.56 Fahrenheit) higher than
the 1961-1990 annual average of 14.00C/57.2F.

Though full figures will not be available until March of 2009, the
researchers said the year was slightly cooler than previous years due to
a strengthening of the La Nina weather pattern in the latter part of 2007.

However, scientists say the year was marked by a rise in extreme weather
events and saw Arctic Sea ice drop to its second lowest recorded level.

"The Arctic Sea ice extent dropped to its second-lowest level during the
melt season since satellite measurements began in 1979," said the WMO in
a December 16 statement released in Geneva. "Climate extremes, including
devastating floods, severe and persistent droughts, snow storms,
heatwaves and cold waves, were recorded in many parts of the world."

According to the report, the worst weather-related natural disaster
experienced during 2008 was Cyclone Nargis, which struck Burma in May,
killing an estimated 78,000 people.

The WMO said its source for the preliminary data was collected from
worldwide networks of land-based weather stations, ships and buoys, as
well as information from satellites. It also received complementary
information from the Hadley Centre of the UK Meteorological Office, and
the Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia, UK, and the US
Department of Commerces National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA).

The full annual report, the WMO Statement on the Status of the Global
Climate, will be released in March of 2009.
